BA Wants Concorde Replacement After 15 Years Later

Mon Oct 23, 2000 11:20 am

I just read in the news section that BA wants to continue supersonic air travel.....
the concordes can fly to another 15 years..
BA is really pushing the manufactors to put the Concorde back up in the air by next Febuary.........BA wants the future of supersonci travel to grow.........the article said they want to find a replacment for the concorde by 2015........
my question is......is it possibility that we will seek a growth in supersonic travel?...

It would be nice but I highly doubt that we will see another SST in the near future. I hope though that the Concordes get off the ground. I think though that the traveling public will be wary of them now.

I really hope that the Concorde flies again. And we should really be having another SST in the air.

It has never happened that mankind has had to take a step BACK in technology. Imagine telling your grandson that "in my time it was possible to fly LHR-JFK in 3 hrs, though it now takes 7.5 hrs".

I think BA is being practical here: it should take atleast 15 years to come up with an economical alternative to the Concorde. But i have no doubt that it will happen.

IndianGuy, how is being safer, more environmentally friendly, and more efficient going back in technology?

I don't see why eveyone is so weary of the concorde. It has the one of the best safety records around. 1 crash, in its 20 years of flying. Thats good. Compare that to a 747.

I dont think that the concorde will fly again, although I want to see it fly again. I think that boeing or airbus may develop an SST, and if operating costs are low, they may sell very well.

Actually, it has the worst safety record of all FAA certified jets.

To compare, look at the fatal even rate for million flights:

A300 - 1.04
A320 - .68
733-5 - .33
747 - 1.76
757 - .46
DC10 - 1.93
MD11 - 3.92
Concorde 12.5

Statistically, you are 7.1 times more likely to die in a Concorde than on a 747.

If not a "big" SST, then a small (10-12 seats) supersonic jet may be built in 15 years. It will be able to be used in airline service too, and it is better than nothing for BA and possibly other airlines.

I'm agree with IndianGuy in what he called a step BACK: if not in technology then in transportation, and I can't remember another example of regress in any area of human activity.

Again about the next-generation "big" SST that was almost killed by majority of this forum in another thread  : no breakthrough now doesn't mean no breakthrough forever. Despite all CURRENT arguments based on CURRENT technology.
