AA Slot Divestment At JFK

Wed Feb 27, 2013 10:58 pm

This has been talked about before on this forum but for the life of me I can't seem to find the thread. I remember reading that AA offloaded several of its slots at JFK in the past. Does anyone have specifics on this? When this happened, how many slots, why, etc.?

AA has also bought JFK slots from others, most recently B6 when they announced their interline agreement.
"Did he really need the triple bypass? Or was it the miles?"

AA is in growth mode at JFK not downsizing. Sure they are stopping some Caribean routes but Terminal 8 is going to be one happy Oneworld family under one AA controlled roof.

They leased slots from JetBlue at JFK, in response, B6 got 1 flight from HPN and DCA slots. No sales, just leases.

AA cut most the the eagle regional flying(listed by STT) but I don't believe that JFK/EWR were under the current slot program at the time.

AA has also cut back on some of the Caribbean flying thanks to the growth of LCCs. (mostly B6)

Correct. Slots went in effect full time when B6 and DL built up in the mid 2000s. Prior to that, they were only in effect in the evening rush hours.

AA had around 100 flights. B6 and DL were slightly less.

In short time, B6 shot up to 160 flights and DL shot up to 200.

That basically where we stand today: B6 holding around 160 slots, Delta holding 200 slots and AA around 100.

AA continues to shrink, and will lose the slots if they do not ramp up soon. They have to be used a percentage of the time

Actually, the FAA lifted slots completely in 2007 (it was slotted in the evening hours before, but this rule expired). They only re-introduced slots in 2008 after delays got really bad in the summer of '07.

You're correct.

I figured I'd keep it less complicated because it was such a short period

Afternoon slots -> No Slots-> All slots

So as we stand today JFK is slot controlled 24/7? I thought it was only 2pm-10pm or something along those lines.

What are the differences between JFK and Reagan, that justifies why slots can be sold/bought at one but not the other?

I understand the point you were making with your post, but AA/AE still flies several of the routes you mentioned with similar equipment/frequency. For example, ANU, CUN, BGI, STT, SXM, DCA, and YUL.

Why are slamming AA for a business decision TWA made ? In case you forgot, TWA had a hub in San Juan before they were sold to AA. AA has no more A300 and JB is owning the Caribean, AA is foscusing places A320 can't fly to like Brazil.

From what I understand, DCA's rules are permanent and the NYC ones are more of a temporary nature that keep getting extended. The FAA hasn't come up with a permanent set of rules for the NYC airports yet.

Another thing about Reagan’s slots…it’s capped at 67 movements an hour, but maybe 50-60 of those slots are for commercial aviation (commuter and mainline) - I don’t know the exact numbers. The rest are for general aviation aircraft, whose numbers have fallen off a cliff since 9/11. Those general aviation slots are essentially unused and haven’t been allocated to airlines. So, it’s generally under capacity for much for the day.
