Excellent news! UA doesnt even serve HMO or ZCL from IAH. Given US serves PHX-HMO, it makes sense to add a route to DFW since there is no service from those markets to the central/eastern US. Good to see AA thinking ahead.

MIA-SAN was a long time coming. Too bad MIA-AUS wasnt also on there.

Good news - logical, and not unexpected, adds. MIA-SAN was screaming for a nonstop. The new DFW-Mexico markets should further strengthen the DFW hub and AA's position in Mexico.

What about PDX-MIA, SJC-MIA and SNA-MIA? I think those are the next markets screaming for a MIA non-stop.

I think MIA-Central Plains is a place where AA has a lot of room to grow - MIA-SAN is a good start in growing domestic connectivity to the huge MIA International hub.

MIA-OKC/TUL/MCI/AUS/SAT/ELP and TUS would be good adds. AA is strong at XNA and LIT too, which could easily support a daily E75 or probably a S80 type aircraft to MIA. Too bad AA's smaller mainline and larger RJ planes are gone from MIA now!

Great news. SAN was the largest Metropolitan Area without a non-stop link from MIA with AA. Now, the largests MSA without n/s service from MIA with AA are PDX, SAT, SMF, MCI, SJC, AUS, PVD, MKE, OKC, SLC, BUF and ROC.

At MIA, AA's smallest mainline aircraft seats 148/160 passengers (738) and Eagle's largest regional aircraft seats 50 passengers (ER4), so there is a huge gap between both. With the introduction of the A319 on the mainline side, and the large RJs on the Eagle side, it is clear that a lot of new destinations will be considered and some of these cities will, eventually, gain non-stop service with AA.

AUS is now the only destionation from MIA that is served from all of the other hubs, and also from all the US hubs. (3 daily from LAX, 5x from PHX, 15x from DFW, 4x from ORD, 3x CLT, 1x PHL and 1x JFK). Just for connecting the dots, it should be one of the next adds.

The one that has the best chance is SNA. PDX is a non-starter and MIA is not a tech market so SJC doesnt make a lot of sense.

Only MCI, AUS, and maybe SAT make sense. The others are non-starters.

And for SNA there is a slot issue. To add a MIA flight, they need to reduce something else.

Money in the bank. MX once served DFW-ZCL back in the day (I think it was 4x weekly?) before it withdrew from DFW (briefly) in 2005, but never resumed this route (along with MLM and GDL). Very excited to see AA remain committed to growing DFW-Mexico.

I assume that's really to rotate airplanes through the TUL maintenance base, not just to serve the TUL-MIA market, correct?

They are former CO markets that were served from IAH in the early 2000s. The markets may have matured since and apparently AA feels they are ready for Texas service again.

Awesome that SAN-MIA is finally happening. Guess people in San Diego will still have to fly through Texas to get to much of South America, though, due to the red-eye eastbound.

HALLELUJAH!

It's been a long time waiting and years since SAN-MIA was last flown nonstop (1992-93!) I for one am very happy to see SAN finally connected to the final major AA hub!

The schedule is not bad - this is one of the first (mainline) red-eyes SAN has seen in a while from AA (since summer of 2007) and the timing of the r/t makes for essentially free a/c time. And connections from/to SAN over MIA should be well served.

AA and OneWorld have a very nice presence in SAN now, with great intercontinental coverage!

No, not the reason it is there. The main routing to TUL for maintenance is 534/585 (DFW-TUL) and sometimes 485/548 (ORD-TUL). The volume of 737 work at TUL is very high and one flight a week a few months a year does very little for routing to TUL for maintenance. Does it get utilized that way, yes sometimes, but not very often.

It is a seasonal route that does pretty good. I don't think there is enough traffic to support daily service but Saturday service is perfect for the cruise industry and the resorts in the Caribbean that typically offer packages from Sat to Sat. Thats why it doesn't operate in the summer, demand is low for both.

Doubtful given UA's current strategy on "consolidating" but a restart to HMO wouldn't surprise me completely.

It is a good move for DFW.

Surprised at no AUS-MIA still.

I'm sure the airport authority would be happy to allocate a daily slot to AA (next year of course). And I think they would definitely appreciate a new destination... Or with the new AA/US, they could definitely switch out a PHX flight for a MIA flight.

Also, wouldn't there be an aircraft issue? Can a 738 takeoff out of SNA with a full tank of fuel? I think the runway is too short. A 757 could probably do it but that is a lot of airplane to fill.
I'm not complaining, I'm critiquing...

FINALLY!! SAN-MIA was the big route missing from SAN. I'm so happy SAN-MIA will be nonstop because it greatly reduces flights from SAN to the Caribbean from the 2 to just 1 stop flights. Although I prefer AS to FLL to Southern FL I still like the AA to MIA route just for the connections. This flight will be very successful compared to the previous attempt in the 90s. Congrats to SAN and AA

What about PDX-MIA,

From your lips, to the new AA managements ears, but for reasons I'll state below, it won't happen anytime soon.

Quoting LAXdude1023 (Reply 6):
PDX is a non-starter

PDX is lucky to have 4 non-stops a day on AA to DFW during the summer, all M80's too, (in fact the longest currently flown AA M80 route in their system) other than that, we have no other AA service from here.

AA pulled ORD a while back (even though every time I took those tired old MD's on the route, it was always full of connection traffic) Now AS flies that, and AA puts it's code on those AS flights.

AA has had two west coast networks that included PDX, those were gone shortly after they were acquired. PDX has never had a non-stop to JFK, BNA, MIA, or RDU, we did have an AA flight to STL after TW joined the fold, but that is gone. Oh yeah in the late 80's we had 2 AA jet flights to EUG from PDX, that I used to get to college at the U of O.

My point is, PDX has seen little love from AA, even though the AA sales staff was working very hard here in PDX to get the big agencies booking more with AA, I think one year PDX got 1 757 to STL or DFW, can't remember which.

Other than the SEA-NRT flight, that had connections to points east, AA has shown little interest in the Pacific Northwest, operations are smaller than in the past at SEA & PDX, and other NW cities like EUG & BOI are just gone.
Next Flights: PDX-HNL-OGG-LIH-PDX On AS, WP & HA

That's fine. If AA saw the demand for South American connections, the flight would have been timed for a late morning, noontime departure. Obviously this is not the case. They probably will get more cruise traffic, hence the redeye eastbound .
There are quite a few Colombians who reside in the San Diego area, so they can benefit from this redeye actually with the day time connections onward to BOG.

Eagle flew XNA-MIA a couple years ago as well. Always lots of open seats on it so it got axed. It was a non-rev dream though.

I've heard from folks that the IAH RJ network to Mexico was very strong in loads especially with business traffic for the growing number US company maquiladoras, but it was the bigger RJ cost issue reared its ugly head as fuel ran up.

So while many of the markets have certainly demand, the question is more how to serve it profitably. A RJ while good for capacity size was too expensive, while a 737 might be cheaper on seat basis, but too much capacity.

Lets see how AA makes out now with its revised lower cost base using Eagle.

Great news for us in San Diego! I love the Caribbean and the new AA flight makes travel to the region much more convenient. At the moment, if you fly AA you must make two stops - it almost takes longer to get to some of the islands than it does to get to London.
