Delta Tops Fortune 2013 Most Admired Airline List

Thu Feb 28, 2013 5:44 pm

Congrats to Delta employees - Delta emerged as the #1 on Fortune's World's Most Admired Companies - Airline Industry List for 2013:

http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortu...dmired/2013/list/?iid=wma_lp_toprr

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/delta-...2013-fortune-worlds-165000229.html

On the Airline Industry LIst for 2013:

Rank / Airline / Score

1. Delta 6.37
2. Singapore Airlines 6.1
3. Lufthansa Group 5.73
4. Cathay Pacific 5.67
5. Southwest 5.52
6. Air France-KLM 5.5
7. United-Continental Holdings 5.33

However, only two airlines made it on to the overall Top 50 Most Admired List:

#7: Southwest
#31: Singapore Airlines

I believe the Airline Industry list is voted on by airline execs and industry insiders, whereas the Overall list is voted on by all (i.e., across industries, etc.), hence the discrepancy in the rankings/showings.

Also, in comparison to previous years, Delta was #4 in 2012, but #1 in 2011.

2012 rankings were:
1. United-Continental
2. Singapore Airlines
3. Southwest
4. Delta
5. Lufthansa
6. Air France-KLM

2011 rankings were:
1. Delta
2. Singapore Airlines
3. Southwest
4. Lufthansa
5. Air France-KLM
6. Cathay Pacific

As happy as I am to see DL on top, these lists are a dime a dozen, many are subject to bias, etc

Congrats to DL anyway
Ironically I have never flown a Delta MD-90 :)

I kind of have difficulty taking any survey seriously that ranked UA/CO as #1 in 2012.

To the lay public, maybe...People who are not in an industry generally do not keep track of what is really going on in other industries as much. That's why the Overall List is very much driven by what names people know of, and what their traditional reputation has been. It's one of the key reasons why Southwest and Singapore Airlines remain in the Top 50 Overall - where past glory and reputation play a big part. If you are not in the business, you will be forgiven for not knowing the travails of Southwest for the past year (integration issues with FL, diminishing RASM increases, etc.) People in the industry know what is happening to Southwest, and that's why Southwest has fallen in the Industry Ranking....

I think the 2012 ranking was definitely based on the fact that UA/CO would be a very strong global carrier with the merger - with great hubs and an unparalleled worldwide network, etc. (Attributes like Global Competitiveness also factor into the survey, for example). Also remember that the 2012 rankings were based on 2011 performance; the UA/CO issues really reared their ugly head in 2012....
I believe a pre-merger CO had also been voted Most Admired quite a few times...so with CO management essentially taking the helm of the new UA-CO, perhaps there was also some bias/expectation that UA-CO would be a star performer.

But then why such high rankings for UA/CO in 2013? Given the abysmal performance of UA in 2012, I don't see how they got 7th place?

What would be a good reason for AF/KL to be at number 6?

Here's how UACO did with the nine criteria: (numbers are the ranking)...looks relatively mediocre across all fronts except for maybe Use of Corporate Assets...

Use of Corporate Assets 4
Social Responsibility 8
Quality of Management 8
Financial Soundness 5
Long-term Investment 6
Quality of Products/Services 8
Global Competitiveness 6

Though wouldn't the industry insiders have more of a bias overall for their particular organization? Whereas the overall picture removes most issues with industry bias. It is odd how Delta, he largest airline in the world, can't break the Top 50 overall but yet Southwest can. Yes a lot of that is also reputation, but that is also going to be what drives a good chunk of business when companies find an airline to book with. If a travel director had a crappy experience on NK but an awesome experience on DL, they'll book their people on DL. Not picking on those two airlines specifically, but just giving an example.

These lists are good PR talking points and also come in handy when recruiting employees or new customers. Other than that, eh. Good job to those that do what is expected and are getting recognized for it.

Very good for Southwest Airlines.

They are truly an impressive company.

Its well deserved they are being recognized as top global admired company.

For 40 years now has been looked at as a model company - from customers, to employees, to the manner they run their business. Southwest has served as the true model to emulate success.

For Delta and others, well they are simply one medicore US airline after another. It does not matter if Delta is above United, or vice versa, at the end its really all the same.

Oh I think many people know and love Southwest.

See one of the most popular destinations for Tahitians is Las Vegas. How do you think they reach this? Fly to LAX and catch Southwest service.

Also many many people in France or Europe know of Southwest. They are regarded as model of good carrier. Even some airlines have said they look up and emulate Southwest like founder of EasyJet.

So yes I think many people aware of Southwest.

They seem to do excellent job for customers, employees and finance folks.

I would tend to believe that reputation factors a lot more into the overall rankings since it involves people that may not have a lot of particular knowledge of companies in other industries.

The airline-specific ranking probably includes a lot more knowledge about what the company is doing in more detail.

Not surprised, as WN currently is living more on its reputation that what exactly is is doing with the current WN-FL merger.

Who said Southwest was a global company? Or that global coverage was required for the rankings. It seems to just ranking the business.

When did DL go back to being the "largest airline in the world"? It hasn't been that since the UA/CO deal was finalized and now, indications are that it's down to #3, with the UA/AA merger.

I'm a little confused vis a vis the overall rankings and the airline rankings........I would think that if WN and SQ can rank that high in the overall rankings, they should at least rank that high in the airline rankings, UNLESS their peers in the airline world don't, who know about these sort of things, aren't sure that they deserve rankings that high amongst just the airlines.

You obviously meant US/AA.   And as far as ranking, it depends on the what you go with. More people fly DL than any airline in the world, of course ASM wise UAL is bigger.

Or their peers could be jaded against them? Everyone wants to do better than SQ, so maybe that needs to come into play? Sure industry insiders are more educated on it, but they may want their company/partners higher ranked than others who have done better than them. Who knows. Its another ranking list...there is one every week.

I wonder how subjective these lists are really. I looked on the top 50 companies and only WN and SN came up in that top 50 yet DL is supposedly on top of the list? There seems to be a discrepancy here so what credibility is there for the topic.

Time really tells. If Delta winds up on multiple surveys in one of the top spots maybe they are doing something correctly? Wait another year and see what happens. I think Delta will again be on the Money Magazine list in 2014 as well as many other lists (most of them good)

First Congratulations to Delta they have earned it.

But how is it that that Delta is number one on the airline list but they don't even crack the top 50 on the main list that has all the companies around the world? Both Southwest and Singapore are on the top 50 list so how does Delta out rank them on the airline list? It is a little confusing and strange and makes one question how how these lists are complied.

I have to wonder, just how many of the "top" airlines have a recent bankruptcy that lowers thier standing in the rankings of all companies.
Is just me, or is flying not as much fun anymore?

Crap like that happens. It's weird, but it does. People who make these lists don't necessarily make consistent decisions.
