Minoan Air OXF Flights

Thu Feb 28, 2013 6:26 pm

Following on from the now closed thread: Minoan Air Oxford To EDI And DUB On Sale (by summa767 Jan 27 2013 in Civil Aviation)

It looks like the Minoan flights OXF-EDI-OXF are actually going to start.
Minoan's facebook page says;
"On Friday [1st March] SX-BRS will arrive in Oxford at 11:00. The aircraft will be the first of the Minoan Air fleet to launch our scheduled services to Edinburgh and Dublin. First flight to Edinburgh on Monday 4th of March."

SX-BRS arrived at OXF this morning, just before 11am I think.
Currently can be seen on the apron webcam: http://www.oxfordairport.co.uk/pilots_guide/weathercam.htm

According to this news item, OXF can expect a second airline announcement in the coming days.

Any guesses at which adventurous carrier it could be?

- Flybe
- KLM Cityhopper
- Thompson
- Jet2
- BA Cityflyer
- Eastern
- Suckling reborn (Just dreaming.....of the good old Cambridge days)

Interesting.

With OXF's 5,092-foot runway, it won't be TOM or LS. Given NM ceased OXF-JER, it may well be BE flying the route summer-only using the DH4. Would be pretty logical, likewise perhaps other sought-after routes. Or perhaps KL to AMS, given that it has previously said it would launch 3 further UK routes in 2013. But would the F70/E90 be able to operate into/out of OXF with sufficient payload?

The question will be for how long?? On all flights is still the basic/lowest fare available - not a good sign!

Also, what does their slogan mean:
"Travel in business class comfort from Oxford to Edinburgh and Dublin."
Will we see free champagne and meals on board? Looking fwd to the first TR online!

I don't anticipate a DUB-OXF route given Minoan will be flying it. But if it wasn't, surely RE - with its AT4s - would be the most logical operator in conjunction with EI and providing connections to/from the USA.

WX flew OXF-DUB back in 2011 for a travel company to connect to the EI flight to JFK

I merely said I can't imagine WX (or RE) operating it while another operator (Minoan) does.

That's the question we are all wondering - of course, if prospective customers in the wider population are nervous about its longevity then they won't book and the question of "how long?" will become self-fulfilling.

Anyway, the service did start this morning with SX-BRS operating OXF-EDI-OXF.

Having had to spend a year with my only choices being BA LHR-EDI or EZY LTN-EDI, I am now spolit for choice with Minoan OXF-EDI and VS LHR-EDI both being added

A new entrant on the JER route for a tour operator is pretty likely.

The F70 and E90 should have no problem from OXF, especially on a short route like AMS. Considering their high frequency services to BHX, LHR and to a lesser extent BRS, they must have a lot of data on OXF's catchment area and I would be very surprised if it couldn't support a double daily AMS service.

My understanding is that an EI Regional service with AT7s was ready to be announced when Minoan pretty much crashed the party and announced it themselves.

Not very surprisingly (as they are all the "usual culprits"), the routes (beyond EDI and DUB) that OXF themselves identify as being viable / possible are in decreasing order of size:
AMS
CDG/ORY
FRA
BFS/BHD
MUC
GLA
BCN
(but there is not very much variation in market size according to OXF - they say Paris, DUB & EDI are all about the same size markets with AMS being the biggest)
I think KL to AMS would be a surprise but not a huge shock - they should be able to fill 2 x E190s per day. Perhaps that would have the added benefit of allowing them to give up (i.e. renting out for money and thereby getting more profit) a slot or two at LHR.

And, of course, the many connection opportunities from AMS.

Anyway, will certainly be interesting to see what comes. I reckon JER is most likely, especially given it's not too many months from the summer.

Indeed. Reading OXF's website, they make something of the fact that in the run up to the Olympics, they were visited by more and larger private jets, including a 737 BBJ. Also that more of the private jets had heavier fuel loads, some for transatlantic or middle eastern flights.

KL does seem to want to make more of the UK market. Manston was announced last November. I should really hope that OXF is served at some point. The sooner the better.

Planning for success (which is what they should be doing), Minoan management are saying that they are looking at AMS and/or CPH for 2014. KL should get in there first on AMS.

Just watched this evening's (7 Mar) flight board at EDI for OXF. 10 pax boarded. Not sure whether that is good or bad for week 1 of operation.

Traditionally routes took up to 3 years to be profitable, so it's expected that it may take many months for this route - if, of course, it does. Obviously this would be built into their financial plans - but if, of course, it deviates... (LCCs can make routes profitable very quickly.)

And, to be fair to Minoan and to put it into context, I was on the EDI-LTN Easy A319 that left at about the same time and it had an LF of no more than 50%. A wet Thursday evening in early March is probably not the time to expect decent load factors.

...and the challenge on the route will be much more difficult - as VS will start soon there "Little Red"-Service as well.
Will be a hard time for Minoan Air!

While waiting for my flight elsewhere, I had a quick look at last night's load factor (the Thu evening rotation OXF-EDI-OXF). As far as I could see, it looked like there were about 15 pax disembarking at EDI and a similar amount waiting to board for OXF.

Well, they've already outlasted the former operator on that route.
