With the current poor financial situation in Sri Lanka, it is highly doubtful that either carrier can afford new airplanes from either Airbus or Boeing. They have a much better shot of getting some used aircraft that other "third world" bottom feeding nations have parked, or in the worst case, looking at some of the boneyards in Mojave, Victorville, Marana for something flyable for a few years.

i find it funny that in Finnish mihin lanka means literally "which thread Or where to put the thread" . Would a332 make any sense considering the small fleet size?

The article mentions 777's, which seems an extremly big jump in capacity for a small airline like Mihin Lanka currently using A320's. As much as I would love to see another 777 operator, I think they are unlikely to buy any in the near or mid term future. More than likely 737-700 or -800 models.
Today, I am absolutely fantastic, tomorrow, who knows?

Seriously, the sooner Mihin Lanka is merged into Srilankan and operate as one unit, the better. If Mihin was to become the true LCC arm of Srilankan, then that would work too. But it seems they compete on some routes which makes no sense.
I have no idea why Srilankan surrendered Bahrain to Mihin. What makes Bahrain so different to the other Gulf markets that UL currently serves?

As much as travel into/from Sri Lanka is growing at promising levels, and Sri Lanka has been able to score some high profile airlines to its shores lately (Korean, BA, Turkish) , I highly doubt having two government controlled carriers make any sense to anyone. Let;s hope SriLankans entries into oneoworld reaps them some significant benefits.

Mihin lanka was nothing but an airline brought into existence due to the whims and fancies of the President of Sri Lanka. The president's own brother in law infact is the CEO of the airline    and is paid handsomely every month by no small means considering the cost of living on the island.

No wonder the airline is bleeding money.

I remember reading initial reports when the airline was formed where not a single flight was flown for months but 2 aircraft were dry leased and yet the CEO and his cronies were getting paid from the Sri Lankan tax payers coffers

Mihin Lanka has never made profit since its creation however the people involved in the management get paid on time with fat increments every month

Srilankan Operate 330s and 340s. Agreed the 340s are not very fuel efficient but then they are barely able to fill it up every time it flies from the middle east. The 320s however are the workhorse for the both srilankan and mihin lanka. For the love of God i have no idea how they call them inefficient fuel guzzlers and want to replace them with new B737s and B777s! The 777 would just be too much of over capacity for them in the current scenario. Plus the million $$$ question is ...where does the money come from for these new aircraft and more importantly who is making $$$ out of commissions for the said new deals.
