Commercial Flights To Honolulu 1971/72

Need some expert help. Would like to know which airlines flew from the US West Coast to Honolulu in 71 and 72. Sense my first flight in the middle sixties to the present I can remember them all....except when our family travelled there for a military transfer.

In the early 70s, HNL service from the North American mainland looked like this:

United: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, New York (they may have had San Diego service as well - not sure and my timetables/OAGs are at home)
Pan Am: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle/Tacoma
Northwest Orient: Seattle/Tacoma, Portland, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago
American: Chicago, St. Louis
Braniff: Dallas
TWA: Los Angeles
Western: Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, Anchorage
Continental: Los Angeles, Seattle/Tacoma
CP Air: Vancouver

LAX and SFO were, not surprisingly, the big gateways, with SEA trailing in third. Northwest Orient continued on to Tokyo. Continental continued on to Johnston Atoll, Guam and Micronesia. Pan Am continued on to Tokyo, Guam, and several points in the south Pacific (heading for Australia and New Zealand). American also flew onward to Australia via Nadi and Pago Pago. TWA flew to Manila as part of their round-the-world service.

UA also did BWI-HNL on a DC-8-62 around that time.

I don't think UA started SAN-HNL until after that time. WA did SAN-HNL.

It would be interesting to also list the ITO flights. PA had dropped ITO by 1971 but UA, WA, NW, BN, and CO served ITO then.

I believe Pan Am axed Hilo in 1970 - either they or Braniff were the first to pull out. United, Northwest, Continental and Western all made the move to the new ITO terminal in 1976, although most didn't last long beyond that. United was the last overseas carrier to leave Hilo in 1986.

Many thanks for your replies. Any idea on the aircraft used by the airlines? I've never heard of Western. I grew up on Hickam AFB and used to live and play near the active runways and don't recall seeing them.

Pan Am only served Hilo for a year or two around 1969-1970. Braniff still flew DAL-ITO with a 707 for a few more years.

UA's last Hilo flight was in 1986, as you state, with a DC-10 routed something like LAX-KOA-ITO-LAX. Of course, ATA and UA have again more recently served Hilo from the mainland. I'd love to see AS in ITO, but it's probably not likely.

AA was 707s

Braniff was the 747 (Big Orange) and 707s

NW was 747s and 707s.

Correct. Braniff flew 707-320s and 747 from DAL to HNL. The 747 was used from DFW. According to this thread, Braniff used 707-138s from DAL to HNL. Braniff 707-138Bs To HNL? (by jackbr Sep 5 2012 in Civil Aviation) Reply #11.

Western was one of the U.S. first airlines, starting service in 1926. They survived sixty years as primarily Western/Midwest U.S. airline with some East Coast destinations added in the 1970s/80s. They were merged into Delta in 1987.

They started service to Hawaii in the late 60s/early 70s.

CP also had limited seasonal nonstop service between YYC/YEG and HNL during much of the 1970s. It was a once-a-week DC-8-63 that operated a triangular routing HNL-YEG-YYC-HNL in the early '70s. By 1975 that flight used a 747-200.

We used to fly Western Airlines every summer from SFO in a DC-10 "Spaceship." About an hour before landing, they would roll around this plastic volcano and serve punch--dry ice for effect and all...

That is correct, although I didn't realize CO did ORD-ITO/HNL.

UA was flying nonstop SAN-HNL (using DC-8-62s) in '70-'71. (They were not flying the route in '78 and I'm not sure when they stopped flying it.)

WA also had the authority and was flying between SAN and HNL in the early '70s.
