WestJet Charter Between ATL-YHZ?

Tue Mar 05, 2013 11:19 am

not sure, but there's a few flight numbers that look suspect in/out of Halifax today (4000 series flight numbers). Flights involve Orlando and St John's. Maybe a 763 is being chartered (Omni or Atlas?) to clean up after weather problems. Pure speculation.

Anyone know who is chartering this flight?

More Importantly, when did WestJet get B763s?
( I know, it's a FlightAware error or another carrier operating for WestJet.)

Not yet. It's N378AX of Omni. Perhaps the aircraft is now flying from operating base or following some maintenance to departure point of a charter flight.

It's definitely Omni! Sitting at the YHZ Terminal, Gate 24. Possibly there to operate a YYT turn for Westjet, as they have a very significant backlog of passengers due to the YYT WXX/Fog IRROPS this past week.

WestJet Charter Between ATL-YHZ?

A friend of mine just flew YYT-YHZ on the Omni 763 operated on behalf of WS. It was indeec because of the huge backlog between those two cities. The 763 flew in (ferry) from ATL this morning. AC has also added an extra section (E90) between the two cities.
Next flights: YQM-YOW-YOW / YQM-YYZ-CPH-YYZ-YQM / YQM-YUL-LYS-BRU-YUL-YQM / YQM-PUJ-YQM

I saw N378AX at YYT today when I arrived from YYZ on AC.
Indeed the last 4 days were challenging for AC, WS and PD flying into YYT. The fog was very think here and the RVR's were low.
I was stuck in YYZ since Friday coming back from Florida. I know many AC flts did get into YYT, but WS pretty much cancelled everything. I think today is the first day since Friday that a WS a/c landed in YYT.

The same Omni 763 is now operating WS4801 between YHZ and MCO on behalf of WS. Maybe some backlog there too?

Is it a flightaware error or does it really take 2:37 from ATL to YHZ. Seems short to me.

Nice looking paint job on this bird and refreshing to see her here at YHZ, but to ferry from ATL to YHZ must have been a hefty bill .......must have been the best choice of what was available on short notice ?.....cheers !

Considering that no WS flights landed in YYT between Friday and Monday, I can only imagine the bill from all the hotels and meal vouchers for the thousands of pax trying to get from YYZ/YHZ-YYT.
I flew into YYZ from FLL with my daughter on Friday and it quickly became apparent that I wasn't getting to YYT on my AC employee passes. I couldn't buy a one way ticket on AC until Monday, so I bought one on WS for Saturday night. After that flight cancelled, we were put up in the Crowne Plaza for 2 nights and were given $80 in meal vouchers!
When I called WS the next morning, the agent told me he had no idea when they would be able to get us out on a flt to YYT.
I ended up cancelling my booking with them and booking with AC for over $500 cheaper.
From my understanding, the first WS flt got into YYT on Tuesday.
I'd venture to say WS didn't make too much $$ this past weekend on flts to/from YYT.

WestJet pays for passengers' expenses in any case of interruption (I think they call it the "Careantee").

Yes, as far as I know, WS covers hotels and meals in cases of flight interruptions. AC did the same thing for most people this week who were stuck in YYZ. Many of the people who I talked to there said AC put them up in hotels and gave meal vouchers.
As mentioned before though, most of the AC mainline flts did get in to YYT. I think all Jazz flts cancelled.

WHAT!? Seriously? This is unheard of in North America. I should have totally flown WestJet.

This is not true. I was stuck here trying to go back to Buenos Aires and AC did not cover anything. They said to me that for weather delays and events, they don't give anything. I should have flown WestJet! I know they are better, but this adds one more reason why.

I can assure you AC did pay for accommodations and meals for numerous passengers travelling to/from YYT this past weekend! I talked to many people who were stuck and they all told me AC put them in hotels and gave vouchers.
Typically, no, AC does not give accommodations for weather related delays, but sometimes there are exceptions made, and I guess this past weekend was one of those exceptions.

It seems a bit odd to me that WS would charter a 763 to help recover a backlog, rather than just run additional sections with their own NG fleet.

Surely, in a fleet of 100 NG's additional capacity (even just 1 NG) could have been found internally for a day or two.
I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

Well obviously not, otherwise that's exactly what would have happened. I'm sure that option did not escape the minds of those dealing with the logisitics at the airline.

Neil, I think part of the problem was that there was a snow storm in YYC on the weekend and many a/c were stranded there (this is what I was told by a buddy of mine who works at WS and also by the Res agent at WS). Add the 3 daily sked flts plus the adhoc flts that were all scrubbed between Fri-Mon and that leads to a hell of a lot of people to be moved.
I do agree with you though, I surprised there weren't 1-2 a/c available to help out.
What I find odd is that WS's MCO-YYT flt managed to land on Sat and also their PUJ-YYT flt on Sunday while all their other flts cancelled. Maybe coincidence?!?

No doubt! Still makes it odd. Generally, the larger the airline, the more they can "self-recover" though.

Makes sense. Well good for spotters at both locs.

Yes. But next time, I will be sensible enough to fly WestJet to MIA and connect to American Airlines.

To be honest, when my WS flt cancelled, I didn't find their customer service to be that much different than AC's.
Yes WS offered hotels/meals, (as did AC in this case) but they could not tell me when my flt would depart. Even when I called their reservation line the following day, the agent said they had "no idea" when they would be able to get us a flt home.
At least with AC they would give you an idea...yes, it might have been two days later, but I would rather know that than have no idea.
