What Is Norwegian Planning To Do With 100 A320NEO?

Wed Mar 06, 2013 5:11 am

When Norwegian ordered the B737MAX and A320NEO they said that they were planning to use the B737MAX for their network but that they had some other plan for the 100 A320NEO's that they ordered. However, I don't recall that we found out what that plan was.

What are they planning to do with the 100 A320NEO's as they don't plan to use them on their network? Do we know yet?

My idea is that they either are planning to 1: Lease them or 2: Use them on the North-Atlantic through with a hub in Iceland for NA and European destinations. I however admit that I have no clue what they are planning to use it for.

I'd think they will be used to gradually open up bases in other countries other than Scandinavia. They are starting already this summer as LGW will see DY services to holiday sunspots.

They will also open a base in Alicante.

They already have a base in Malaga and Helsinki ( Finland is not in Scandinavia ).

I've heard this absurd rumour doing the rounds on galley FM this week... easyJet will buy the 737 MAX and sell/lease them to Norwegian and in return they will do the same with their A320 NEO to easyJet!

A respected member of this site is adamant that DY will NOT operate A320neos.

I don't recall where I saw the suggestion, but one theory is that they will lease them out to other operators.

Isn't a 320 kind of a large plane for flying the relatively short distances in and about Scandinavia? Wouldn't a regional jet be a better given the distances involved?

The bulk of their fleet is the slightly larger 738. Norwegian is a very ambitious and growing airline- they are not just flying within Scandinavia anymore.

Look at DY's order book: its worse than EK!!
They currently have 70 or 75 planes, all short-haul 737s: a few 733s and mostly 738s.
They have somewhere around 250 planes on order: 35-40 738s, 100 MAX 8s, 100 NEOs, and a few 787s thrown in.

My belief is they will keep all of the new 737s, replacing the current fleet with a 135-150 strong fleet. They will lease out the 320s.
If all goes well, they will exercise some of their options, growing their 737 fleet, possibly leasing out the new 320s as they come in and selling off the old ones (sort of a Ryanair idea of keeping a young fleet and selling the old planes)

Are the DY NEOs finalized as 320 models? Or could they be made of a mix of 319s, 320s, and 321s?

In an previous interview, the CEO mr. Kjos mentioned that the airline will have between 175 and 200 aircraft flying in 2022.

Here is the NEO:

I think you guys are very negative against Norwegian. They have 64 737-800 and 10 737-300. The average fleet age is 4.8 years.
They are replacing their 737-300 and their oldest 737-800. They are expanding at a high speed.
Them seem to move out of Scandinavia into all Europe.
Regarding the number of ordered planes. The orders for the 737-800 will go into replacement and expansion perhaps to end up with 120 737-800. They will use the 737-8MAX to replace the 737-800 at that time. If they keep all the MAX and NEO they will end up with 200 birds.
The B 787 are for Norwegian Long Haul, a new operation with new destinations.
Their business model seems to be working they are earning money.
If you want to compare them, why Emirates, I would look rather at AirAsia.

Yes, I believe they will use the aeroplanes ordered.

Most people in the industry believe Norwegian intends to start a leasing company with the A320neo order (something Airbus allows, but Boeing generally does not). Whether the leasing company is successful and takes the 100 aircraft ordered is another question altogether...

Why?

They get the first B 737- 8 MAX around 2018 or later. The youngest plane they are flying now will be at least 5 years old than.
I assume they will get the first A 320 neo around 2016, the right time for the expansion plans.

Ryanair has 305 aeroplanes average fleet age 4.5 years.
Easyjet has 188 aeroplanes average fleet age 4.6 years.

If Norwegian will do what they plan they need those frames themselves.
They could lease out the old stuff.

2010 they got 13 x 737-800, 2011 16 737, 2012 13 737 and this year already 6 737, all in use.

And even then the leasing company may lease them back to the airline.
