Interested In MD-11

Tue Oct 24, 2000 2:11 am

Hello All,

I'd like to know more about this mighty a/c, the MD-11. I really loved it when I saw it landing in Heathrow. Huge triple-engined bird!!!

Is it still in production?
What are the major airlines using it? And, in what routs?
And, what about its technical specs and performance?

Thanx...

boeing stoped production of that plane a few years ago. The 777 is a much better plane, for the money.

The last three MD-11Fs were built and delivered to Lufthansa Cargo in February of this year.

Biggest (passanger) airline which is using the MD-11 is Swissair with 19 aircraft in service. Routes to North and South America, Middle and Far East and Africa.
Other airlines:
China Eastern (6), China Airlines (4), Eva Air (12), Lufthansa Cargo (14), Aer LIngus (leased from World, 1), Korean Air (4), Thai (4), Saudi Arabian (4), Alitalia (8), JAL (10), American (8?), Delta (15?), Finnair (4), Gemini (3), Citybird (3, 2 leased to Sabena), KLM (6), Martinair (6), Varig (15?)
hope that helps

For more informations about MD-11, I suggest to check Boeings website as well as websites of Swissair and other operators.

BTW, by 2006 the last MD-11 will leave Swissair's fleet. They will replace it with A330-200 and A340-600. This will be good for Swissair from the economical side and a little bit sad for spotters at ZRH.

Gerardo

This is really sad. It is awsome!

What does make it a not-economical a/c?

Well above all fuel consumption and then of course maintenance. The tail engine is expensive to maintain.

The beginning of the end for the MD-11 started, when Singapore cancelled the already ordered MD-11 due to range shortage. The MD-11 failed to meet the expectations.

The MD-11 failed to meet its performance specifications. Delta currently has 15 aircraft. They fly LAX-NRT and next year, they'll fly LAX-NGO and JFK-NRT. Delta also uses them on European routes like ATL-LGW and ATL-FRA. However, Delta will eventually replace them all with the 777. American used to have more MD-11s, but they are gradually being sold to FedEx.
