BA Announces New Route To Granada From London City

Tue Mar 19, 2013 12:10 pm

This a very unexpected route and surprised that it will be year round, but according to this website:

"British Airways is to start flights to Granada from London City Airport and will be the only UK airline operating to one of the most historic parts of Spain.

The year-round service will launch on July 25, just before the start of the busy summer season..."

Cool development.

I remember when Ryanair used to fly to Granada from Stansted.

Quite surprising from LCY as well - is there a strong business community in Granada?

It will be a tourist route to improve cityflyer aircraft utilisation, along with the other sunshine destinations from LCY

Doubtful - it's a fairly popular tourist destination. Don't forget that BACF operate a variety of sun routes from LCY, e.g. PMI, ALC, AGP, IBZ, etc., etc.

And WX serves a variety of regional French destinations - including AVN, BES, DOL, TLN - for leisure/second homes.

BA will suspend LCY-Barcelona from the same date.

Cool new route for Granada. It could sound surprising that they fly to GRX from LCY before than to SVQ, ALC or BIO, but from GRX they have no competition at all to the UK, while from these other airports they have to compete against a lot of low-cost airlines.

BA already serve ALC from LGW and LHR. I would love a LCY-ALC service. Would be very useful personally.

I wonder if we will see further changes to the LCY network.

BA CityFlyer have done charters to ALC in the past, I'm quite sure that they have. They have also served FAO, PMI, IBZ, AGP, and Cagliari too.

Shame that they will be dropping the BCN route though.

Na !

Just a nice place for a few bankers to rest and recuperate and partake of fine dining and good wine for along weekend or short midweek break.

They might also take advantage of the Spanish Property slump to award themselves a bargain villa/winery or two !

The 190's have operated GLA-AGP as charters in the summer, so range shouldn't be an issue with a GIB flight - it's whether or not there would be performance limitations ex LCY.

ABZ-AGP too on summer charters, prior to the ABZ runway extension!

I doubt it will last too far beyond the summer.

I flew AGP-LCY with BA on the E190...they're only 50mi away, so can't imagine there'd be a problem getting to GIB. I think GIB would work well from LCY, although it'd be more business types I guess than holiday makers. No one has a holiday home in GIB! (well, not compared to the numbers in Spain).
http://my.flightmemory.com/shefgab Upcoming flights: LGW-OPO-LGW,LHR-FCO-CTA-LIN-LCY,LHR-AMS-GRQ-SEN,LTN-CPH-LHR-ORD

If I'm not mistaken Spain don't allow flights originating or going to GIB to use their airspace. So the flight would have a slight detour around Spain. Now can E190 handle it. My bet is that it can't.

Not strictly true all UK-GIB transit Spanish airspace however then route out over the Med in uncontrolled airspace before contact and vectoring with Gibraltar ATC.

Disappointed about BCN being dropped, perhaps it'll be back if IAG gets control of Vueling.

Just heard in the BA office today that BCN is only a temporary suspension and will be back at some point. It's because of the competition with other BA mainline services from LHR and LGW.

The Granada route will be operated 4x weekly to start and then increased to 5x weekly in the Summer period. Also, AGP will be upgraded to 5x weekly in the Summer too.

IAG has too many flights from LHR and LGW to BCN, the sooner they bring back the LCY route the better.

When will they drop the slot sitters from LHR?

Is the vacation calendar very different than the Eastern US? By 25 JUL, the Summer season has been going for almost 2 months.

BA flights to GIB do overfly Spain. Here is a link to the BA490 flight that as I write is over southern Spain:

http://www.flightradar24.com/data/flights/ba490

The winds at GIB can be tricky. So far this month BA have had to divert six LHR-GIB flights to Spanish airports, usually AGP. Most recently this was BA490 on Tuesday 19 March and before that the same flight on 12 March. When this happens the passengers on the flight are bussed to Gibraltar and those on the return flight are bussed to Malaga.

So I asked BA at LCY the reason for the cancellation of the BCN flights.

They just muttered that it may just be a peak summer only suspension.

Interesting that they haven't really briefed their staff correctly.

The Saturday BCN service has just been cancelled and not replaced with GRX.

I guess this is policy "just in case".

If you read any BA press release or statement concerning a flight or destination that is being withdrawn it is never "discontinued" but always "suspended"!
