Strong Winds At Narita

Wed Mar 20, 2013 10:57 pm

On March 13 Naita had exceptional strong winds. Delta diverted over 50% of their arrivals. The following 388 landing is some indication of the breezy day.

Wow that is stunning. Nearly had a nicely scraped nacelle on the port side!

I have never seen that particular landing before. It was like the 777 took on it its own to make that landing finally come out safely. What a great airplane Boeing built.

Wow, NRT seems to be famous for these kind of landings. How often is the airport affected by this kind of weather?

Well the OP says this was "exceptional", and I don't doubt that if 50% of Delta's flights diverted. But Narita is notorious for gusty crosswinds. I fly there once or twice a year and I don't think I've ever *not* had a roller coaster landing. I definitely experienced one landing that was probably similar on the outside to that A380 touchdown, where I really thought our 744 was going over on its side or heading off the runway. I mean I felt some real sideways G-forces, and definitely could tell the plane was not level on the ground. It was like being in a ship in rough seas, we were listing from side to side literally until we slowed to taxi speed.

Narita's only got runways facing in one direction so there are going to be crosswind landings, but they always seem particularly gusty there.

Do they go through extensive checks after such landings for structural damage or just routine inspection.

Wow it would be great to see the video from inside that cabin - I wonder if one exists??
Prepare for take-off.

I imagine the interior of that Thai aircraft was just as colorful as the exterior

That's what you call testing A380 wings for cracked ribs to the max.

What is the XW technique for landing an A380? It looks like kicking it straight and dipping the windward wing down could easily result in a pod scrap!

I was flying out of NRT at that time! MAN OH MAN was that a crazy day in Tokyo. Not only were the winds nuts at the airport, but downtown as well. Dangerously so even, as at one point, the wind picked up a metal cafe sign and threw it towards me forcing me to duck.

Our flight out (SQ12, an A388) ended up being delayed after boarding. The winds rocked the plane back and forth at the gate for probably about an hour before we were allowed to taxi and take off. Watching all the planes land, however, we could see them just being tossed around, including the big 777s and 747s.

I've never seen wind like that.

Check out 5:29 of this one, same day.
