Delta Arriving Tbit @ LAX

Thu Mar 21, 2013 1:31 am

Upon arriving LAX this evening from Tokyo HND, Delta Air Lines Flight 636 parked at Gate 103 at the TBIT
Is this new? Are other U.S. carriers using the TBIT for international departures/arrivals?

I know that AA was/is planning on using 4(?) gates at TBIT-West for some international flights when it opens, but I haven't heard of any US carriers currently using TBIT for international flights.

From time to time AA has to use those gates when there is no space at T4.

FIS is closed at T-5. Instead of busing over they sometimes opt to park at TBIT directly, deplane and then tow the plane off.

Same is done by other airlines at time (eg United, Virgin America, Alaska). If a gate is available, and you want to pay for the use of the gate, there is no problem.

This is new - a sequester casualty? Does this mean VA also has to use TBIT?

So that explains the VX airplane I saw parked at TBIT a few weeks ago. Do they disembark their passengers at TBIT or bus them to T3?

No, nothing to do with that. Just the regular FIS hours. I dont have a schedule with me, but I believe it closes around 1pm currently.

No, they arrive into T-5. FIS opens at 5am.

The VX Mexico flights use TBIT. If gates are available they will park and disembark at TBIT directly. Otherwise they will park remotely or at T-3 and bus over.

Also T-5 is having the Jetways replaced with a New jetway system. It also looked like there was some work being done in the FIS area, as of last night. HTH

Since when did VX fly international? Embarrassingly enough, I thought they only flew domestically. That is why I was so surprised to see a VX plane at TBIT.

Their first International flight was to YYZ in June 2010 but later suspended the flight. In December 2010, they started service into Mexico.

T6/7 gets busy with 4 or so AS arrivals from Mexico around 5-6pm. Sometimes better to go to TBIT. Also T6/7 closes before 8 anyhow which sometimes requires the shift to TBIT.

For VX to Mexico - they run Cancun and Puerto Vallarta from LAX & SFO, plus a Cabo flight from SFO.

I knew about the YYZ flight that they later suspended, but never about Mexico. I have even flown with VX but never noticed they had flights to Mexico.

They operate to CUN from LAX

Not yet. Other then overtime, we have been told at SFO that the effects won't be felt much yet.

Actually, VX uses T2 for it's several times a week CUN arrival. I personally handle that flight 2-4 times every week. Kinda getting old actually, I wish my sups would assign me to do something else sometimes haha.

Only CUN-LAX. PVR and SJD are SFO-exclusive, though I wish that wasn't the case.

True, forgot to mention that. CUN is the only international destination for VX at LAX though.

T6 FIS closes at 6pm now so any arrival after has to go to TBIT. It used to close at 730pm so more busing or parking elsewhere.

Did terminal 3 ever have FIS facilities? I ask because if so, there seems to be no sign of them now (and T3 is definitely the least refurbished, most like the original 60's terminals). I just never recall seeing TWA parked anywhere else. They obviously had a host of international flights in and out of LA over the years.

No FIS at T-3.

TWA in the day used T-2 (prior to 1984) and TBIT (post 1984) for FIS.

Similarly AS used TBIT for most of its time in T-3 for its FIS needs.

Thanks LAXintl. Growing up in LA and flying out of LAX all the time, I guess I just missed seeing TWA anywhere else but 3. I do remember AS always using the Tom Bradley. When did all the other terminals start getting FIS facilities? Growing up (in LA from the late 70s-early 90s), it was just T2 (former intl. term)and the TBIT when it opened, and at seems like it was just these 2 for the longest time. Now I believe it's just 1,3, and 8 that don't have FIS (is this correct?).

Regarding terminals - way back in the day prior to TBIT, FIS was available only at the then T-2 which was the old international terminal, and also over the old T-5 for Western and Mexicana.

For the others - TBIT opened in 1984, T-2 was rebuilt in 1988, T-4 remodel in late 90s added FIS, T-5 was rebuilt in 1988, and T-6/7 customs came in with the 1999 UA remodel.

For TWA for the longest period had its daily 747 LHR flight arrival park at TBIT in the afternoons.

Now how does this work for connections? Sounds like it'd be a pain to connect this way from TBIT to T-5.

Connections walk out of TBIT, either keep walking to T-5 or take the bus.
