Thu Mar 28, 2013 1:40 pm

LOT will lease Airbus A330 from Portugal's HiFly on April 12 to fly Warsaw to Chicago.
Leasing will be until the end of May.
18 business class seats and 288 in economy.

Interesting. Wonder if it will receive Lot titles or it will fly in Hifly flamboyant all white colours.
How many 763s are still active, and which?

Think they have 3 in service. I know LOT is hurting after losing out on Warsaw - Chicago lift.

This is from a few days ago.

I suppose it also means LOT is expecting its 787s back in the air around the end of May.

Here's more info on this.

March 28 (Bloomberg) -- Polish airline LOT, the first
European airline to receive Boeing Co. 787 Dreamliners, is
leasing an Airbus SAS A330 to operate transatlantic flights as
the U.S. aircraft remains barred from commercial service.

I can't imagine it would be financially worthwhile to change the livery for an initial lease that is barely more than a month. They might apply a LOT sticker to the fuselage at best, and that assumes the aircraft is even available for painting.

If the grounding of 787 is costing LOT as much as they claim it does, I would guess HiFly operations start in mid-April because that is the earliest they have an aircraft available, and LOT is not about to waste some of that availability in a paint shop.

This is ironic, as the French government originally wanted and put massive political pressure on LOT to try to convince them to order the A330 instead of the 787.

I really feel for LOT. They are in the process of repositioning and reinvigorating themselves and it has been brought to a halt by issues that shouldn't have arisen at such an established stage. I was on their EIS WAW-PRG flight in December and I saw the pride the employees and the wider company as well as the community felt for the Dreamliner and now their 787s are parked in WAW, ORD and PAE at a time when the 767 should have pretty much all but disappeared from the fleet and the 787 should have been established on most routes. Obviously, I realise that the 787 will be back in service soon (I hope) but nonetheless, it is frustrating to see. It is however pleasing to see LOTs SP-LRC at the forefront of test flights as part of getting the programme back off the ground.

Here is a rendition of a LOT A330 on cardatabase, ironically, portrayed on a Hi-Fly aircraft;

CS-TFZ with 18C and 288Y (high density 3-3-3 config) seats confirmed on Polish aviation forum. One has to wonder if this is not a subtle message to the cousins at Boeing.

While I'm sure LOT is pissed about the 787 issues, at this point switching to the A330 and/or A350 will do more harm to LOT than sticking with the 787. The boat to change sailed a long time ago.

The A330 is a wet lease to fill the gap for the summer schedule. The pilots are from Hi-fly however, some FA will be LOT's I guess to provide instructions and help to Polish speaking passangers.
They may lease another A330 if the fourth B767 does not complet a c-check in PVG on time. Apprently there is a shortage of B767 so they had to get what they could.

In ORD today (Thurs, Mar 28) I saw the LOT 787 being towed into the Term 5 gate (M6 OR M7 didn't catch which one exactly). Any clues why it was being towed onto the gate?

Yes when I left today I say LOT 787 parked at M6 so it might be on the move.

No, it's just the most immediately available wet lease on an aircraft similar to the 788.

We moved it around today to check fit additional gates at T5. We did 4,5,7,8 and 9. We have 10, 11 and 12 to finish up. It's now parked back on hardstand 25.

HiFly seem to be doing good business... short leases to Norwegian (A340) and now LOT (A330)... and I bet the lease rate is very profitable for them...

You say this as though LOT have a choice. They are between a rock and hard place until Boeing sort out the Dreamliner. LOT have 3 sat at PAE waiting for delivery; LRC, D & E, all ready to bring an excellent product to its customers. They will then have 5 787s in service and the 767s will be gone.

At least they'll HAVE a hard product while the 787 is idle.

I just did a dummy booking ORD-WAW-ORD. Outbound on 3 May still lists an LOT 763, but return on 12 May lists Hi-Fly A330.

As an aviation enthusiast I understand this. But as a customer expecting a J seat and getting an Y+ seat I wasn't so happy. But at least the food was tasty, the wine and brandy OK and the flight attendants very attentive.

Now, here's the situation: LO doubled the J prices after the 788 was introduced. If I'd be a customer who paid $5k for a lie flat seat and got Zoom's premium economy seat or Hi-Fly's whatever it is, I'd be really, really upset.

Perfectly understandable, it may be worth contacting customer services at Boeing. If it wasn't for the grounding, the product you anticipated would have been provided. It is totally out of LOTs hands and it is likely beyond scope to source a wet lease with the same (Sicma?) lay flat beds.

SP-LPG just came back from its c-check, but unfortunately will not fly for LOT. Its owner has signed a new lease when they thought LOT will not need them. It will go to an operator in Ukraine.
This forces LOT to either find another aircraft or adjust their summer schedule.

As I am admittedly unfamiliar with the procedure of what happens during extended groundings, I assumed that Boeing would come up with something to alleviate the strain this grounding has put on 787 operators (much like a loaner car a dealership provides while your vehicle is being serviced). I guess not...

They will probably get some financial compensation, but it is not like Boeing has planes sitting around that it is able to loan out.
