ABQ Traffic Drop

Fri Mar 29, 2013 1:50 am

It's been a common position by many here that the changes at Love will impact operations at ABQ. Unfortunately, there's no way that can be the only reason for this:

- Passenger traffic has dropped 19% from 2007 to 2012
- Passenger traffic 2013 YTD has dropped 12% from 2012
- Nonstops have dropped from 40 in 2008 to 28
- Total departures have dropped from 133 in 2008 to 99 in 2012 and expected to drop further to 87 in 2013
- SWA has dropped from 55 departures last year to 48 this year

Some of the drop is attributed to a 15% reduction in travel by the largest area employer (Sandia Labs). Some of this is also due to the demise of ExpressJet. The only bright news is that JetBlue starts in April, but with a really poor schedule. ABQ is fighting a combination of factors - no geographic reason to be a hub, ~1M area population not big enough to support a large O&D count, Eagle skimming off some of the Santa Fe demand...

WN starting up DEN and using it to do many one stop flights that used to use ABQ as the middle stop is pretty huge. The end of the wright amendment will do another pretty big hit WN side.

I wouldn't dismiss B6 so quickly.

When was the last time ABQ had service to NYC?

That has to be a big coup for the airport

Demise of ExpressJet? Care to explain what you mean by this?

These stats were in an article today in the Albuquerque Journal. Here's a link.

I think it was DL that last flew to JFK nonstop just a few years ago... and it lasted, what, maybe a year?

And B6's last foray into the southwest desert country, TUS-JFK, didn't last very long, also just a couple of years ago I believe.

I give B6 to Kennedy about a 50/50 chance of being around in the fall of 2014.

DL never had nonstop ABQ-NYC as far as I know. CO, however, had a nonstop ABQ-EWR from time to time. The main problem was that it was timed solely for O&D passengers rather than those making international connections. B6's planned schedules don't seem to be any better. I personally think a nonstop ABQ-JFK on DL timed for international connections would be more successful.

ExpressJet's branded operations. Though it can't have been that much of a contributor...6 cities. Figure 6 routes, 2x daily flights, 50 seats/flight, 60% load factor, 2 directions. Multiply it out and it's only 260,000 passengers. The drop was 1.3 million passengers/year, according to the article.

Ahhhh, thanks, I guess that's what I was (sort of) remembering... I knew somebody did some sort of nonstop from NYC.

If you go back a little further in time, TWA used to have one as well. Mostly using a 727, but also an L-1011 IIRC.

Yup, the only other nonstop was CO to EWR. DL has never flown to ABQ from NYC.
