Bwia L-1011 Replacement

Tue Oct 24, 2000 11:09 am

Has anyone heard the latest on the BWIA L-1011 replacement. The last i heard is that BWIA's L-1011's were being evaluated for replacement and the choices are the A340 and the 767.

Hope they get either the A340 or the A330

To add to the BWIA L-1011 replacement. Tropical Aviation from St.Kitts had leased a BWIA L-1011 (9Y-THA) to start operations. BWIA has to be making some final decisions on the L-1011 replacement.

TIA were going to lease 9Y-THA from us, had BWIA been serious about wanting to do the sale/sale-and-leaseback of their three L1011s. However, they have decided to keep THA operational as it's already had its rear web spar modification completed, unlike TGJ which has been grounded in its place.

The failure of the IPO - coupled with the disappearance of close on US$30m worth of asset value from its balance sheet - puts the viability of BWIA in doubt, let alone any long haul replacement.

Don't tell me BW is going to go the way of Air Caribbean! All they need now in the Caribbean is for BW to go belly up and then AA will take over the entire market. I do think the alliance with UA will help a lot, but L1011s sitting on the tarmac at Piarco won't.

I don,t know who Ceildh is but I have never seen him write anything positive about BWIA. Is it a matter of sour grapes? For your information, the I.P.O. has been approved and is due to be issued in mid November.
Air Caribbean went belly up for many reasons. The failure of Air Caribbean and the exit from the POS/KIN market by JM should give BWIA some much needed breathing space. They also plan to expand to ATL in January 2001. By the way they expect to take delivery of anothe 737-800 reg# 9Y-KIN at the end of this month.

9Y-KIN. Would that be flying to KIN (Kinston) by any chance?

737-800NG - don't get me wrong, I am not anti BWIA - just anti the practices of the senior management and (some) politicians who are destroying what should be a great little airline.

Don't hold your breath about the IPO ... I hear that there are some very serious allegations about to surface that will, yet again, throw doubt on the veracity of the figures provided.

Another question you should be asking - if you're BWIA staff - is what exactly happened to all the shares the employees were given. Did you get yours? At US$1.25, they represent some serios money in TT terms! I'd start asking why the unions aren't making a lot more fuss about this....

Strange how certain people rail against the management practices of others, and yet at the same time have publically admitted to fraudulent actions in their own past?

Well, it seems that for now BWee is THE only major choice for flying into POS, especially with the rapid-sequence departures of JM and C2. I see that 9Y-TGA is being repainted right now, thus enabling it to fly the new logo. In the meantime, -TGJ remains in semi-retirement and 40D is grounded, although out of the hangar it occupied for so long.

BTW, does anybody know which of its MD83s has been in the other hangar ad infinitum? I have seen it there for months without its horizontal tail.

Honestly, I wonder who will take up the slack, both on the domestic market and regionally (eg to BGI) vacated by the two carriers. Perhaps LIAT on the domestic sector and EC Xpress to replace its battered parent (JM) from BGI?
