Olympic Airlines - flight goes to Athens via Bangkok using A340 with a seat pitch of 60 inches. At Athens, you would then need to connect to a London flight.

Emirates - flight via Singapore and then onto Dubai where you would then have top change to London flight. Seat pitch 47/48 inches and great service.

Qantas - 50 inch seat pitch to Singapore where you then connect to Swissair flight to Zurich on their MD11 - seat pitch 47 and not ptv.

Jal - all flights via Japan - often it is necessary to spend one night in Japan due to poor connections.

Malaysia and Virgin - all Malaysian flights would go via KL and I guess that you would then fly onto the US to connect with Virgin. This is rather a long flight. Saying that I often use MH business class to fly from London to Sydney via KL and the service is excellent.

SAA + ANZ- schedules mean that the flights from Sydney arrive in S Africa early morning and you would then need to wait until the evening to catch the London flight. Seat pitch is 45 and not ptv - well they are in the seat in front. The return via ANZ would be through Los Angeles. Seat pitch is 50 and service is good.

Cannot help with Air Lanka - but I have visited the main airport in Sri Lanka and it is horrible.

I do hope that the above is helpful. Of the above options, I would probably opt for Emirates - my pref would be for MH if you can go Syd to KL and then onto London ie without going via the US

Take something that just gives you the norm "Singapore" stopover.

Do Japan Airlines and go one way via Osaka and one way via Tokyo.

I beleive that JL will give you a free overnight northbound as the flights don't connect.

If it were me I would choose QANTAS and Swissair.
You don't say what your final destination is so it is hard to work out which city you are going to land in as schedules could be important.
Emirates I have heard of favourable reports and prices are quite reasonable for business class.
The connections in Japan don't seem to match Aus-Europe with usually 1 night stay in Japan and a 10hour wait in Tokyo on return(maybe depend on schedule)
Air lanka or olympic don't seem to me to be ideal choices.
Malaysian and Virgin sound ok depending on schedules.
via South Africa and New Zealand seems like the long way round.
Frequent flyer points could also be important. Approximate 30,000 points for business class would get you a short return trip in Aus.
Hope this helps. Tell us what you decide.
Why fly non stop when you can connect
