Lion Air Plans Venture With 1000 Planes

Tue Apr 02, 2013 9:30 am

Bloomberg reports that Lion Air plans a venture with 1000 aircrafts within the next 10 years.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-0...tures-using-1-000-plane-fleet.html

I guess we can expect at least 2 more mega orders withing a few years from Lion Air if their plans materialises.
Good luck!

Does anybody else think that this may be a little over ambitious. Unless, as stated there is a large demand for leased aircraft that they can benefit from?

I feel that Lion is quickly forgetting where PanAm was heading prior to its demise. AirAsia is still keeping the same level of focus and sensibility about its expansion after ten years, however Lion appears to be getting over-ambitious.

Too bad. Recently tried out JT SIN-CGK and was not impressed by the 29 inch pitch and overall lack of service. I wish it was other Indonesian carriers like SJ (Sriwijaya Air) that were growing this fast instead!

A bit off-topic, but does anyone know the plans for CGK?

In 2012, it was the 9th busiest airport in the world with 57M PAX. That's above DXB, FRA or HKG!! In 2008, it only had 32M PAX. If they keep this pace of rate, they would be among the Top 3-5 airports in the world in this decade.

As I understood form the article, they already have 700 aircraft on order (incl SAs + turboprops), so we're talking about an addition of 300 more over the coming ten years.

The airline has a total of 700 planes on order, including turboprop aircraft.
“The plan A that we have is to put all these planes that we have ordered into operation,” Sirait said. “We also have plan B: if someone is keen to lease our planes of course we will do it.”

Not as fantastic as the headline seems, but I can't comment on their viability or the soundness of their business plans.

As an American flying in Indonesia, I have to tell you the thought of Lion Air expanding is just down right scary. They already have the worst safety record here. They go off a runway about every 1-2 months. So far they have not killed anyone. They have wrecked hulls sitting all over. They have a pay F/O system in which you give Lion air 40-50K for a job. Problem is all these pilots are very low time. Then they stick them in shiny new 737-900ER's

Most of the runways here are not "grooved" so standing water and sliding down the runway is common. I can't for the life of me understand why this Country does not try to upgrade their aviation system. So it's certainly not all Lion Air's fault. Even Manado had no radar. My company forbids us to fly on Lion air for obvious reasons. They need to get their safety culture up to speed like Garuda. Stop hiring kids and hire experienced pilots.

Pan Am was shrinking drastically, not expanding, for years before their final demise.

It's called pay to fly, it isn't only at Lion Air, and Lion Air don't even do it anymore.

That's not really a problem. Low hour isn't an issue if the training is good.

Again, not a safety issue. Ryanair hire almost exclusively very low hour pilots as their first airline job. They are one of the safest airlines in Europe. British Airways, Lufthansa, KLM, SWISS, Etihad, Cathay all hire "kids" with no airline time who have just completed training, and are some of the safest airlines in the world.

Lion Air may not be a beacon of safety but that is NOT because they hire low hour FOs.

Lion Air is still hiring pilots pay to play.

Their training is bad.

They have no safety culture.

This is after talking to some 40+ Lion Air pilots.

Suggest you read up on Indonesia. Europe it is not.

In my opinion, Lion Air is striving to be a better airline. I have not heard of any safety incidents lately. Talking to 40 pilots does not represent that the airline has a bad safety culture. Besides, why would you badmouth your own employer. There are so many airlines out there and these pilots could have just worked for other airlines.

Did you talk to them personally? Or just through some online forum?
