Big Day For Kent's International Airport Today

Tue Apr 02, 2013 11:34 am

Today is an important day for Kent's International Airport - Manston, UK - as KLM inaugurates its new 2x/daily service from AMS, the only scheduled flights from the airport.

And much like familiar Ryanair claims, the new route has created 140 new jobs at Kent's International Airport.

Do we know how many people are on the inaugural services? Some KLM insider perhaps?

I'm looking forward to flying MSE-AMS later this month. It's about time I flew the F70.

140 extra staff to support an 80 seater flight twice a day ? Wow - hope this service does well if only for their livelyhood's sake.

Advance bookings are 'good' - well I hope that's not just being polite for the marketing launch.

Quoting factsonly (Thread starter):
And much like familiar Ryanair claims, the new route has created 140 new jobs at Kent's International Airport.

That's not actually what it says:

Quote:

The East Kent economy has received a welcome jobs boost with the recruitment of 42 new members of staff at Manston Airport.

The recruits will ensure the smooth operation of the imminent KLM twice daily return flights from Manston to Schiphol, Amsterdam. The total of new employees is 14 more than the airport announced when the new service was launched in November, bringing the total number of staff at Manston to almost 140.

From KentOnLine News:

''The new service has created 42 airport jobs and around 5,000 tickets have been sold so far.''

That's over 62x full 80-seater flights. While operations call for 56x return flights (2 daily = 112xsectors) in April 2013.

So if these bookings were mostly short-term KLM would approach a 50% loadfactor. Reality is, that loadfactor is probably a little lower, as bookings will also be for further out.

Forgot to mention that this brings Delta, Alitalia and Air France to Manston as well:

- dep. 09:15 AMS to Manston AZ 3750 Alitalia
- dep. 09:15 AMS to Manston AF 8288 Air France
- dep. 09:15 AMS to Manston DL 9407 Delta Air Lines
- dep. 09:15 AMS to Manston KL 1519 KLM Royal Dutch Airlines

- dep. 20:50 AMS to Manston AZ 3754 Alitalia
- dep. 20:50 AMS to Manston KL 1523 KLM Royal Dutch Airlines
- dep. 20:50 AMS to Manston AF 8290 Air France

- dep. 12:45 Manston to AMS KL 1520 KLM Royal Dutch Airlines
- dep. 12:45 Manston to AMS AZ 3753 Alitalia
- dep. 12:45 Manston to AMS AF 8237 Air France

Though Delta.com doesn't recognise any airport called Manston.

What the sector distance, and the flight time ?

Would have thought the aircraft doesn't cruise just goes up and then down

Maybe a steam catapult (ie like on an aircraft carrier) would get a F70 half way there!

Must be one of the shortest (jet) sector lengths anywhere

Anyway hope it flourishes

As the crow flies, it is 161mi (140nm) with a block time - flight time, taxi time at both ends, and time for short delays - of 55 minutes.

My shortest jet (A320) has been NGB to SHA at 91 mi compared to 161 mi for MSE to AMS; however the high speed rail has taken my flight away.

I'm sure there must be jet flights in the USA at around 50 mi, though, e.g. in California?

Presumably it has to carry enough fuel for a 45 minute hold and whatever for diversions.

Must be a relatively high 'cost per mile' operation

Is this airport to be considered "London metro area"? (like SEN, STN or LTN are).

I'ts conceivable that you will have a longer taxi at AMS than the flight will be.

Is that tickets or seats? Big difference.

Yep. The decline in unit cost (CASM) as sector length increases is a fundamental part of airline economics. On short sectors, CASM will always be higher from a lack of output (ASMs) over which to spread the costs and vice-versa on longer sectors (until payload has to be sacrificed). (Of course, trip, or sector, cost is the opposite.) Then again, RASM (revenue per available seat mile) is also distance-based, so appears higher on shorter sectors and vice-versa on longer sectors from the amount of output generated. Yield (effectively revenue per passenger per mile, so traffic, calculated as revenue / revenue passenger miles (RPMs), with RPMs calculated as sector distance x number of fare-paying passengers), is also distance-based and so ordinarily reduces as sector length increases.

Well only KLM will know, if they are all long-haul tickets to NRT, KIX, FUK, MEX, PEK, PVG, XMN, HGH, etc...or not!

Though I guess there will be quite a number to OSL, ARN, HEL, CPH, BER, FRA, FCO, LIN, ZRH, etc....as day-returns are possible to these destinations.

And......possibly even GLA, EDI, ABZ, NCL.....day-return as well??

Not really, Manston doesn't call it's self London Manston and London is 70 miles away.

People do live in this part of Kent and travel to and from London everyday for work. So London's not that far away. However I wouldn't think many people would fly here when they want to go to London.

No I doubt it could ever market itself as a London airport. It would be pushing it to say the least. It does have a very good catchment area though.

How big is the runway at Manston? I heard that it might be a big day for another reason this year.

Good luck to KLM and MSE!

I'd love to try this route at some point, but probably only on a connecting route

They offer one-way flights from less than £40 all-in on the route (and others on UK-AMS but oddly not AMS-UK or any others yet).

9,016ft and 200ft.

Yep. Had a 20-minute taxi at AMS before (M11 to CAI).

The start of this route might be beneficial for some international University of Kent students who could connect via Amsterdam to fly back home rather than take a two hour train/cab ride to Heathrow.

Possibly - the University of Kent and the others around Canterbury do have a large foreign (mainly Asian) student base.

The trouble is that London isn't that far away (in terms of traveling time) owing to HS1. Heathrow and Gatwick are very easy to get to and there are very good connections To Stanstead and on to Luton as well.

I was amazed at how well 'the garden' is connected!
