Mexico-based Aeronaves TSM placed an order for two MD-82 passenger-to-freighter conversions with Miami based Aeronautical Engineers Inc.

The ex American Airlines aircraft will enter conversion in June.

TSM currently operates a cargo fleet of Metroliners, Convair 640s and DC-9 from its Saltillo base.

The article lists one aircraft, s/n 49342, which turns out to be N430AA - a frame stored since late 2008 in Roswell. I wonder how much was paid for it.

The MD-80 has extremely low market value and you can land one for under a $1mil these days.

According to AEI, the used airframe, a heavy airframe and engine check and the freighter conversion should come in under $6mil. If you don't need the heavy check you can get a freighter for around $4mil.

Cheap option for some airlines as long as you can work with the freight quirks of the MD-80 fuselage.
