IAG To Order 747s For IB?

Wed Apr 03, 2013 7:42 pm

Tacked at the end of reports about IAG converting 18 787 options to firm orders for BA is a paragraph that clearly states that IAG is negotiating with Boeing for 747s for IB!  Wow!http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2.../apr/03/iag-boeing-dreamliner-deal

Quote:
It is also in talks with the airline over ordering new 747s for its sister carrier, Iberia, but IAG said the Spanish airline must complete a cost-cutting programme before making a firm order.

Quote:
IAG said it is also talking with Boeing on the commercial conditions for an order of 747s for the Spanish airline Iberia, adding the carrier had first to complete its ongoing restructuring to rein in costs.

Well, I certainly didn't see that one coming!

I don't believe it until we see something released directly from IAG or BA/IB.

I agree, but:

"IAG said the Spanish airline must complete a cost-cutting programme before making a firm order."

So that's gonna take a while before we hear anything.

Sorry I still don't believe the report. The news agency either completely confused which airline made the 748 order or confused the aircraft type. The 748i doesn't look like it would fit into the IB fleet plan given the Airbus order just announced plus their drive to rein in costs.

The BA news release says possibly 787s for IB not 747s. The quote is wrong.

Is the Airbus order firm or at this point still industry rumor?

The atricle's been amended - here's what is says now

It is also in talks with the airline over ordering new 787s for its sister carrier, Iberia, but IAG said the Spanish airline must complete a cost-cutting programme before making a firm order.

The report was in the Guardian which those outside the UK may not know is known here as the Grauniad: "The Grauniad is a nickname for the UK national newpaper, the Guardian, because of a reputation for typos". I think we can just assume it was a stereotypical typo as the link now says: "It is also in talks with the airline over ordering new 787s for its sister carrier, Iberia"

The report was categorically incorrect.

It has since been ammended.

747 has been changed to 787.

So then the strategy for IAG Long Haul fleet is complete. (almost at least)

1) Lower capacity flights: 787
2) Next Size: A350-1000
3) probably open and a strong candidate would be the 777x (in favor for a 747)
3) The A380 as the VLA for largest capacity needs

nice lineup!

I understand the article has been ammended, but even so I would like to add that IB could only use the capacity of a big 777 (I´ve given up tracking the so called XXX variants, same with the A350) on two routes only:

MAD-MEX
MAD-EZE

And maybe MAD-GRU.

They´ve already stated they won´t be buying a sub-fleet of large aircraft for only two routes, so IAG will porbably assign medium sized aircraft to IB and focus on frequency.

Yeah, I could see BA moving LHR-MEX and LHR-EZE to the A380-800 and just connect Spanish customers via MAD and then LHR to connect to the A380s.
