Egyptair 777-200ERs In Storage

Tue Apr 09, 2013 1:30 pm

I understand that Egyptair currently has two 777-200ERs in storage : SU-GBX (msn 32629) and SU-GBY (msn 32630). Can anyone confirm where they are ?

Many thanks ! Any information on why they are stored - low demand, maintenance etc ?

I wonder why they stored the two younger frames and keep flying the old ones.

I guess its because they are either up for a major overhaul or keep them sort of fresh to keep the re-sale value up.

The original plan was to replace them by more A333's and B77W's, but they cancelled the last A333's on order and converted the last B77W's to B738's and kept the remaning B772's in their fleet. Demand to and from Egypt has been dropped dramatically over the last two years so now they don't need them anymore and are therefore stored. First they were rumoured to go to RJ but that never happend, later new rumours started that they would go to PK, that never happend either.

The last time i have seen them flying, together with the A340-200 was during the air lift from Libya due to political turmoil and NATO air strike... back to spring 2011. They probably use them during the Hajj and Ramadan Omra shuttles

I have just red on http://airlineroute.net/2013/02/27/ms-nrt-s13/ and it's according to GDS that Egyptair -200ERs are back to service as of May 2013, replacing the bigger -300ERs on the CAI-NRT route. They were also expected to operate to Guangzhou. I think it is a gap fill from the B77Ws intended to operate the new route to Toronto

They were stored for a short period and are back in service, MS also activates the A342's occasionally in the Umra season as mentioned. On the downside, MS is studying seriously suspending flights to Tokyo and Osaka.

SU-GBS was just reactivated recently, so there are now two B777-200(ER)s back in service.

Speed news list 2 MS 777-300s for sale SU-GDL/M

Are they looking to get rid of them or are they looking for sale and lease back?

The MS 772s were also unusual in having 3-4-2 Y class seating rather than the more common 3-3-3 (or 2-5-2). There are a few others with 3-4-2 but not many.
