Excellent news. Slowly expanding into Scandinavia.

BTW, the 77W is a three class.

Along with OSL, HEL will remain. I know Finland is not part of Scandinavia before you flame me

I admit to surprise as I had expected that OSL might have come first. I am aware that OSL handles more passengers overall than ARN but how do they compare in terms of International passengers heading to the Middle East and beyond? I note that both are served by QR and TG.

I notice also that the service to ARN is being offered with First, Business and Economy. Is ARN more likely to be able to sustain a First cabin, compared to CPH where only Business and Economy are usually offered?

I suppose the partnership with QF and connectivity to Australia is instrumental in launching ARN with a B77W directly.

Qatar planned to start a route to HEL, but they didn't. I wonder is it because of the Finnair's Asia strategy. Emirates and Qatar can probably compete better against SAS than they would against Finnair.

Very good...so the return flight is meant to connect with the 0200-0330 departure hub wave bank to ISC and Asia Pacifc.

The market sizes for the top 20 markets that EK would be targeting out of ARN with this new service are as follows:

2012 market sizes...

BKK 252,000
PEK 75,000
DXB 58,000
IKA 48,000
HKT 42,000
DEL 36,000
HKG 34,000
PVG 30,000
SIN 24,000
EBL and BGW combined 22,000
ADD 20,000
MNL 19,000
SYD 18,000
JNB 16,000
BOM 14,000
DAC 14,000
CMB 13,000
KUL 12,000
NBO 12,000
MEL 10,000

Keep in mind that in Sweden a total 200,000 Iranians and Iraqis combine reside there !

IIRC QF still code-share with AY to HEL as both are part of the OW alliance. This launch will certainly give travellers from Australia another option. Figures released by Melbourne Airport indicated an increase in holders of Swedish passports of 27.6 % in December 2012 compared to December 2011 but I doubt those numbers by themselves would have influenced the decision.

Well done EK. Can anyone tell me why not start service from summer? instead of waiting till Sept.

I am glad DXB bound flight reaching 10.25pm, unlike most other flight from Europe reaches DXB around 12pm-1am and causes mad congestion at DXB    !

Good question as slots where acquired in November and the planned launch was set to June.
I have heard that it was due to shortage of available aircraft's with a two class configuration.
Now they are launching the service with first class. That could only be temporary and might be a rush decision to secure the launch before the winter 13/14 season.

Thanks for those figures.

When one remembers that EK launched HKT as its second destination in Thailand after BKK, the numbers show that EK could become a challenge for TG.

Didn't they use a 3-class aircraft for an interim period at CPH, just after they switched from a -200 to -300, before they "found" some suitable 2-class capacity?

I am little surprised actually, I was expecting EK to start service with A330-200 and then upgrade to 77W. That's what they done one some route before in recent past.

And not a moment too soon.
Trying to book a through ticket with QF / BA to ARN these days seems next to impossible without doing the stupid LHR to LCY transfer! IT seems ridiculous that they kept the code share on the LCY route but not from LHR!

Us australians with some swedish blood.... well you guys have kind of forgotten we exist. But this is welcome for us. blood is thicker than water.... and we'd like to still be 'with it' and know whats happening in ARN and CPH.... particuarly ARN as a trend setter. everybody can hate EK. but once again... it puts me that little bit closer to the mother country. And I suspect there is a lot in the mother country that wouldnt mind being a bit closer to us. well done EK. once again!

This is a very past due launch. I suspect if EK had more aircraft (read A380s not having wings fixed) this would have been launched earlier. But exciting none the less (although for me as an enthusiast. Very unlikely I'll actually fly the route.)

Does EK have rights for double daily at AMS?

QR, once the new airport opens and the 787s are flying, will be a very interesting competitor to EK...

Could be. I know Qatar acquired slots for 10 weekly from OSL S13, but the plans where suspended due to aircraft shortage created by the 787 grounding. I know they did not apply for more flights from ARN and CPH s13, but It could be that they are planning increase here as well. However I doubt they would dubble as Qatar usually moves forward increased frequency from daily to 10-11 weekly.

Stockholm is a larger market in those areas than OSL still. But with norwegian wealth OSL is catching up fast. Both cities are underserved and next stop for Emirates in Scandinavia is OSL, and probably pretty soon.

Welcome Emirates. This may very well turn out to be one of the most successful routes to Stockholm in a while.

Would you please be so kind and post the same for GOT if you have them available?

One should also keep in mind that a huge chunk of those live in the Gothenburg area, everyone does not live in Stockholm.
IR used to fly the 747 once a week GOT-IKA during summer.
An interesting side note is that TK have been very succesful in GOT with their double daily. I've been on four flights this year and the majority are connecting to/from the Middle East, Ethiopia and Thailand. Markets which together could support a daily flight from atleast one of the MEB3.

They should as KLM used to fly double daily A332s into DXB in IATA Summer 2011 season so I dont see any issue with that.

Schedule was:

KL427 AMS1430 – 2310DXB
KL428 DXB0045 – 0600AMS

KL429 AMS2140 – 0615+1DXB
KL430 DXB0755 – 1300AMS

But yes I wont be surprised if EK makes AMS a double daily service in S14 with the B77W being used for the second flight. If so I bet it will be departing DXB during the 1500-1600 hub wave bank and arriving back the next morning between 0630-0730. Though one would definitely prefer a 0230 dep from DXB, wont obtaining slots at 745-815am arriving into AMS and departing 3 hours later be an issue or has the congestion eased out at AMS during this morning timeframe?

In all seriousness, I also would've expected them to start this service with a A332. Guess that the ARN market is larger than I thought.

It is the largest market in Scandinavia ahead of both Copenhagen and Oslo. It is just that is painfully underserved. Oslo has Norwegian and Copenhagen is overserved by SAS. Stockholm has no such local airline serving its needs of longhaul. But nevermind   Welcome Emirates, this will be one of your most successful routes... It will tap both from HEL and CPH.

Is charter flights included in this figuers? I don't think so. I think Emirates can take alot of the charter pax for HKT and other parts of South East Asia. As Qatar have been doing.

During the winter season there are almost 10 charter flights a week to HKT and 2 or 3 to Krabi from ARN. Along with the 9 flights a week with Thai to BKK and HKT.

Many, as my self, just take a seat on a charter flight to get to the destination and during peek season the seat on a charter flight almost have the same price as a normal ticket. So, it's wise for Emirates to start the service during the winter season, when most Swedes travells to Asia.

Are regional and ISC connections actually good in both directions?

Many of the EK early morning regional (e.g. IKA) and ISC departures reach DXB too late for connecting to the new ARN flight (along with others such as DUB, GIG-EZE, sometimes BCN, NCL, GLA, MAD).

As the EK prime westbound morning departure bank gets more crowded, new flights seem to move earlier and earlier, and the only way to connect to them is to arrive the night before. In many cases there are long waits when traveling eastbound as well.

The passenger volumes to these destinations are likely small compared with Asia-Pacific, but there are so many of them that they may be collectively meaningful.

AFAIK, one of those frequencies is used by the dedicated EK freighter. That was also the reason for why pax service started so late, at first they only had one frequency, and that was used by the freighter as well.

Anyway, about time EK made it to ARN, hopefully OSL comes before S14

KLM in S11 operated double daily A332s + a daily B744F into SHJ so no issues here.

EK in the past made some strange decisions for Europe...remember GVA was supposed to be launched in Summer 2004 and then suddenly it was decided against it and replaced with LOS (which in hindsight turned out to be a wise decision).

So the agreement is 3 daily for Dutch carriers to UAE, and 3 daily for UAE carriers to the Netherlands?

If that is the case, all those frequencies are taken, EK daily, EK freight daily and EY daily.

No no no... You are not enough informed about the scandinavian traffic patterns. I dont think you know that most intercontinental traffic from both OSL and ARN is channeled through CPH? Well that is the case, so with this route the CPH hub potentially lose ground.

I forgot to add one major market segment as well i.e. ARN-NRT which had 27,000 pax fly in 2012 and also the figure for Sweden-Iraq of 22,000 does not include "charter flights" of which I believe there is a once or twice weekly charter service operated by some airline to EBL. Hence, actual market size demand with the charter numbers included would be much larger !

also the figure for Sweden-Iraq of 22,000 does not include "charter flights" of which I believe there is a once or twice weekly charter service operated by some airline to EBL
http://www.flygermania.de/de/flugziele-zeiten/streckennetz/

Sweden - UAE - Iran/Iraq is almost twice as long as non-stop flights.

Quoting behramjee (Reply 38):
one major market segment as well i.e. ARN-NRT which had 27,000 pax fly in 2012

Considering how well-connected HEL is to Japan, and that CPH has a dedicated SK NRT flight, and how huge of a detour Sweden - UAE - Northern Asia (56% for ARN-DXB-NRT) is, I don't think that those are markets worth going after for EK. Obviously you can stimulate demand with low fares, but those of AY are already so low that EK would probably not be able to earn any money on that.

EK will be big to Oceania, India, some Arab countries, East Africa, South East Asia and the Indian ocean (Mauritius, Seychelles, Maledives etc.). Of course you'll have people flying them to GRU, NRT, CPT etc. but for that to make sense, the fare would have to be so low that the only thing for EK to gain from that is market-share/-exposure.

Effective 04 September 2013 Emirates will start daily flights between DXB and ARN using a B777-300ER service

And EK keep adding markets. With the market size described by behramjee, it will be easy to fill the 77W !

Quoting behramjee (Reply 8):

The market sizes for the top 20 markets that EK would be targeting out of ARN with this new service are as follows:

2012 market sizes...

BKK 252,000

Thanks for sharing. I'm surprised with the size of ARN-BKK !!!! It is mostly leisure or business oriented ?
New York + Rio de Janeiro = One of the best combinations !

According to the UK's CAA, 636,840 flew LHR-BKK-LHR in 2012. But given that figure doesn't include LGW (and obviously to a far lesser degree LCY, but that does have connections in FRA and AMS) and that that figure probably does not include sixth freedom operators, what was LON-BKK-LON in total?

Sorry a bit confused, what do those market size numbers mean here?

Quoting behramjee (Reply 41):
HEL-BKK 80,000

In 2012 the passenger number in the scheduled service HEL-BKK was 264,000 totally. The charters from Finland to Thailand carried 131,000 passengers.

It is great that ARN will finally get EK service. Will be interesting to see how QR will do with EK in town. Hopefully both will be able to fly profitably to ARN.

yes also because of lack of many long haul non stops to Asia so competition is minimal. EK and QR combined now will really dent the Asia-Pacific market share of Star Alliance to/from ARN !

These are O/D numbers right?
Hamburg, Berlin and Frankfurt all have about the same population in their regions. Then why is the BKK-FRA O/D market six times larger than the BKK-HAM/TXL ones? Do germans choose to drive/take the train to FRA and MUC just because of nonstop flights? This is the only explanation I can think of, as I find it hard to believe that Frankfurts business is the cause of these large numbers...

Sorry, a bit off topic, but I had to ask.
