That's good news. PVG is a good route for the A380 and I am sure flights will be well booked.

Instead or on top of PEK?
Has the bilateral changed without us all wise men knowing?

Some interesting points in the article.

This is just my opinion but China is not the golden goose everyone seems it to believe. It is is true that they have a expanding middle/upper class with disposable income but they are just as price conscious as the West.

The Chinese carriers, CA,MU, CZ etc, have all seen their revenues drop over the past few months. LH is a well run Company and their "bean counters" know what they doing.

That, or everyone rushed to enter the Chinese market and there is way too much capacity in a market which has not yet fully matured.

Intersesting in deed. So because or even though the region has not performed as well as they would have hoped they want to send an A 380 instead of a B 744, thereby increasing the seat number by almost 200 units?

Wasn't Franz the CEO?

With no new A380 deliveries planned till next year, I guess they will be increasing utilization of the current machines, which, if I am not wrong, have still some hours free in the current schedule.
Unless they change metal on one of the current routes.
Maybe 748s will be deployed to MIA or JFK to free up A380s for PVG?

No, is just Western Carriers in Alliance quick likely have corporate customers with accounts from both side, so the yield and load were higher, beside many 'non-regular' traveler in China would likely not too fuss about whom they travel with (as they don't need to accumulate FFP, Europe is likely not a regular destination for most. If this is a domestic flight, the 'big three; would dominate, int flts, Chinese carriers won't be.

True. The demand is incredible but the yield is low. And the trend is that it will become even lower in the near future.

The PEK is actually a much bigger market for LH because they have their Star member CA. But CA is ... not happy about the 380 issue... CA thought it's a capacity dump ...

If LH728 gets the A380, will that mean the discontinuation of the seasonal second-daily LH732 flight?

on the other hand the A380 has better economics than the B744 (eventhough they are paid off...). this might put a much better light on this decision.
if I'm not mistaken LH wanted to enter PVG with the A380 right away, but regulatories denied this. for the time being only EK is sending it 3x weekly and CZ daily to CAN. for the Shanghai market this also is a question of prestige.

I wouldn't mind JFK switching to the 748i! Don't get me wrong, a LOVE the whalejet, but we get enough of them at JFK that one seasonal one switching to the 748i is not a big deal!

On a side note do we know what names LH will come up with for their next batch of A380's?

I'd think Shanghai, San Francisco, Mumbai, Bangkok, Toronto, Istanbul could all be contenders.

Doesn't that make the best argument for the 380 (allowing that perhaps a paid-off 744 may still be cheaper)? This seems to me to be the perfect usage for a 380 -- where there is sufficient demand but yields are low enough that you need to cram down CASM as much as possible. Granted, the 380 is still relatively premium-heavy at LH, but the CASM should help balance that out a bit.

A little bit OT but then again maybe not: do you know more about the rumour that they will lease some A 380s from CZ?
