DAL Unveils Newly Renovated Terminal To Employees

Tue Apr 16, 2013 3:21 pm

Last Wednesday April 10th the first 11 gates of the new terminal at Dallas Love Field were unveiled to airport employees. A whole new array of restaurants, concession stands and an art gallery are included in this 5 year renovation. Linked below are 15 pictures to look at to give you a glimpse. This new terminal section opens to the public today April 16th. It will nice to have this renovation well underway prior to the lifting of restrictions of the Wrong Amendment.

Although I applaud the new terminal, the old wing will be missed. Many memories from childhood travel. Anyone remember the AA eagle bust by the end gates?

Looks great and a definite improvement over the old facility. As long as its not paid for with any of my property or sales taxes I'm happy. Nice of the city of Dallas to build a new terminal for the near exclusive use by 1 airline.

Just a note, that 1 airline spent a whole lot of its own money on this terminal.

Well seeing how its only dallas airport that the city sees any revenue from they are kind of on the hook to help keep it up to prestige. Its not like other airlines are dying to fly to DAL anyways.. Im pretty sure your tax dollars helped pay for it... so honestly quit the whining

The most interesting thing is the power outlets in the seating area.

Outside of that, just another terminal. Nice, but nothing special...
Inspiration, move me brightly!

The City of Dallas didn't do it to be "nice." The City of Dallas (and WN) spent all this money to significantly improve Love Field because it was a requirement of the Five-party agreement to resolve the Wright Amendment issues which led to the Wright Amendment Reform Act of 2006. Prior to the reform act, Love Field didn't even have a PFC. It was so old that it was already paid for and the last interior refurbishments had been done in 1990. It was (and still will be) a much cheaper airport to to operate out of than DFW.

The City of Fort Worth, DFW, and AA felt this put them at an unfair disadvantage and they were the ones who pushed for these improvements that have been made at Love Field.

That doesn't even make sense.

Anyway, the new DAL looks great!

Sometimes I wonder what drives people to post against capitalism. WN and the City of Dallas and Dallas county and the Feds. provided funds for this project. What does it do for the City/County? It provides positive cash flow and will pay for itself in very little time. What does it do for WN? In the whole scheme of things not alot. They were/are doing fine in the old terminal. In all actuality this knew terminal is going to make life for WN in DAL harder.

There were alot of rules that were grandfathered under the old terminal/operations that will/have expired due to the new opening. EPA rules, OSHA rules, City ordinances, County ordinances, Federal laws. I know you guys and gals don't see it but the folks working downstairs sure do. Alot of it is very simple things, seatbelts on all self powered equipt., orange safety vests everywhere, entry/exit points to the terminal, and it goes on and on. Trust me here, in the big picture WN will do better in the new terminal but when it comes to general operations, it will be more difficult (for a while).

So in effect raise the cost of transportation to citizens at DAL because they wanted DAL to be as nice as DFW?
Cool

A few months before the agreement over the Wright Amendment, there was an article in the Dallas Morning News about DFW possibly having to ask the airlines using DFW for more money due to projected revenue shortfalls at DFW.

D/FW may have to tap carriers' wallets
Airport projects shortfall, and tenants are required to chip in
February 3, 2006

Quote:
American Airlines Inc. and other carriers may have to kick in more money to
cover expenses at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport because of a
projected revenue shortfall, officials said Thursday.

The lighter revenue, expected to be as much as $39 million below
expectations, or 6 percent, is largely the result of airlines cutting back
their schedules at D/FW.

The deficit also reflects American's later-than-expected move into D/FW's
new international terminal, as well as higher energy costs for the airport.

American is by far the largest carrier at D/FW, accounting for 86 percent of
passenger traffic.

But the carrier is relocating some of its service to Dallas Love Field to
compete directly against Southwest Airlines Co. American also has
temporarily canceled some flights to lower fuel expenses.

Those cuts, along with reductions in service by ATA Airlines Inc., AirTran
Airways Inc. and Northwest Airlines Inc., will cause landing fee revenue to
be $20.2 million less than expected.

Landing fees account for 33 percent of D/FW's revenue - the airport's
largest revenue source.

After the new international Terminal D and the Skylink at DFW were built, (and DL de-hubbed DFW) AA's Cost per enplaned passenger at DFW was much higher than WN's cost per enplaned passenger at DAL. So it had nothing to do with wanting DAL to be as "nice" as DFW. It had everything to do with raising the costs of airlines using Love Field, so that would put DAL & DFW "on a more level playing field" with regards to operating costs for the airlines at both airports. And it was an idea pushed by DFW, AA, & the City of Fort Worth. Dallas & WN probably would have been just as happy to make minor (less costly) refurbishments at Love Field, but in a compromise, not every party is going to get everything they want. The City of Dallas & WN agreed to the compromise in exchange for the right to immediate through-ticketing and the ultimate repeal of the Wright Amendment in October 2014.

Ok, but still raising the cost of DAL, not for DAL's benefit but for DFW. I thought this so called "leveling of the playing field" was already taken care of by the articial limits which were put on DAL to prevent expansion, as in carriers leaving DFW for DAL and its lower cost base, seem as if they got hit twice.

Nope, they are both still there. They just aren't shown in the video. Have you ever looked at the statue from his right side. LOL.

Any update on the People Mover to the DART station? It's been about a year since I last heard anything.

Eventually all of the old terminal will be demolished. The portion parallel to 13R/31L will remain until the rest of the new terminal is completed. Edit to say just the gates will be demolished, the main building remains.

The people mover money is being moved over to fund the extension of the new streetcar to Oak Cliff. That money will now be used to extend the line all the way to Bishop Arts (Zang and Davis).

I thought the $250mm APM was part of the settlement agreement and was funded by the Love Field PFC. No?

It linked a remote parking area with the Braniff terminal.

I grew up in Dallas and have always been fascinated by Love Field and its history (although I missed the pre-1974 "glory days" by almost a decade). I don't live there anymore, and so I've been following this project from afar with some interest. I'm sad to see the original concourses and the ticketing/bag claim wings demolished... although the West Concourse was long past its prime, it was still cool being inside the same facility that American used to run DC10s and 747s from. I went back to Love Field around 2003 and took tons of photos of the terminal and concourse interiors... I'm glad I did!

After seeing the photos of the completed work, I have to say it all looks pretty good. I'm glad to see the central lobby retained and many of the historic touches (the sloped ceiling, the world map, the Ranger statue and the garden on the east end) have been incorporated into the new design. It's a bummer that the entire lobby seems to have been given over the TSA queue lanes, but that's reality today in just about every airport.

The new gates look nice as well... spacious and plenty of retail that doesn't intrude on passenger flow the way it does in most airports.

Does anyone know if the original 1958 control tower atop the terminal office block is still there? I saw photos back in January/February that looked like it had been stripped down to a skeleton. I didn't know if they were preparing to remove it, or if a new ground-control tower cab would be built in its place. I can't imagine the terminal without a tower on top!

I was most happy, however, to read that the 1958 entrance sign has been renovated and restored at the corner of Mockingbird and Denton Drive. I remember when they removed the sign back in 1996 or 1997 and replaced it with the completely forgettable concrete column that's still there today. The 1958 sign is a real work of art and it's awesome to see it back at the entrance where it belongs.
