SQ/CX Still On The Top?

Sat Apr 20, 2013 5:07 am

Are they still among the top? Do they still make as much as they did? They were always no 1 in net profit but not recently. Why is that? Will they regain that title?

I would say...various reasons!

1. Gulf carriers have seized a large market share on the Oceania/East Asia to Europe routes.
2. LCCs in southeast Asia weaken the advantage of hub operations in HKG and SIN.
3. Chinese carriers now provide more direct services to EU/North America.

From what I heard they have lots of wasted opportunities. Will they apply them? And perhaps can they regain the former glory?

Whether they are at the top of the game in terms of profit is one issue ... but where service is concerned, both continue to invest heavily in product development and service delivery.

Watch out for details of Singapore Airlines' new product early in the second half of 2013.

Yes, yes and yes. It's just a little more crowded at the top with the Gulf carriers and much improved showing from the Japanese & Korean carriers.

How so? Most of the wasted opportunities have risen because aircraft manufacturers have not been able to deliver their product particularly to SQ in a timely fashion and thus relegated to operate 'old' aircraft longer.

Clearly there is more competition at both the higher end with the gulf carriers as many have pointed out and also the Southeast Asian/ASEAN market has been deregulated significantly affecting SQ. An even more liberal ASEAN Open Skies Agreement underway.

Both airlines face increasing pressures from the LCCs.

They've held up well so far but I think it's imperative that that they reinvent themselves, constantly improve their products and maintain profitably over the next few years or it will all go down, probably for good.

CX could start more routes when they get more planes

The opening of direct services between Taiwan and mainland China has also taken away a lucrative CX market as most of those passengers previously connected via HKG.

I personally think the days of SQ and CX being the top 2 year in year out have been gone for a few years now. There is quite a mix of airlines who claim the top spot for various reasons. Some of the new 'good carriers' to join the likes of SQ and CX include QR, EY, TK, NZ, ANA etc... These guys have all lifted their game in some way/shape/form in recent years that now it's any one's guess. I think we are moving away from having a top airline like it has been historically to a group of top airlines.

Having flown both SQ and CX many times, I would not put them in the same calibre of service. SQ is far superior, with CX being closer to the likes of MH, QF, TG etc.

In Y SQ is probably better. In F/J I think CX is better.

But they both won similar numbers of no 1s

Years past, I felt that CX was probably the top carrier in the world for service. I then spent a few years doing domestic things in the US and only went to Europe. Now that I am back in ASEAN, I have had the opportunity to fly both CX and SQ in all three classes.

CX's overall service level has, IMHO, dropped significantly. The aircraft I have flown on frankly looked a but shabby. On a recent flight from HKG to SIN, I noticed I could see the soiled wheel tracks in the carpet on the CX aircraft upon which I was riding. The "new" CX business class seems a bit confining to me and limited the ability to see out of the windows. The cabin service has become more like that of QF and BA, still good but not quite at the very top.

SQ, on the other hand, seems to have maintained their game quite well - at the cost of some profitability I suspect. Their first class product is amazing, yet I would almost rather fly in their business class product as I find being isolated in my own small room a bit boring. The cabin service is still quite amazing, in all classes, and their IFE is very nice.

I'd say SQ was at the top of the heap of all the carriers I have flown and that CX is now in that next tier down - still very good but not quite at the top of their game.

How often do you fly SQ and CX in J and F?

From my experience, SQ still edge out CX in F. SQ service in F is more polished. In J, they are neck to neck.

As for awards, I dare say SQ wins more awards that CX, be it industrial or passenger surveys.

As expressed by other posters, other airlines are catching up, so the gap is narrowing and in certain areas, already surpassed SQ/CX eg. EK ICE IFE.

Pretty often. If you ask me, I prefer CX over SQ on F and J in terms of food, service, wine etc with the exception of the SQ A380 suites. In Y SQ is better.

It seems that CX wins more no 1s in skytrax the largest aviation survey but again Skytrax is voted online.

But I do agree that CX's standards have gone down a bit over the past 10 years. In the past CX was a much smaller airline and service was a lot better (Back in the 80s). Now CX has grown a lot and is bigger than SQ and I find that the service is not as consistant as they were.

I agree, SQ has an edge as the "top quality carrier". They have marketed themselves much better than CX... the A380, the First Class Suites, Singapore Girls, Changi experience... CX seems like kind of stuck in the 80-90s (just take a look at their website). And the perception about you is important, if you consider how both of them rely heavily on connecting traffic and as a kind of image of their city-states.
