LOT 787 @Chicago O'Hare On The Move

Sat Apr 20, 2013 2:14 pm

At 1410Z, SP-LRA under tow from the hard stand to heaven-only-knows where (they've got it out wandering around in the 10 Pad).

Odd... they've towed it out to the west end of the 10 Pad and disconnected. That's not usually a spot they park aircraft that aren't planning on leaving pretty quickly...

Are they moving the plane to the hangar so Boeing engineers can get to work on the battery changes or are they just moving the plane out to the pad so mechanics can run the engines and check the systems like they have been doing at least once every two weeks since the 787's were grounded?

Any possibility this airplane already has the mod completed?
1. It's in Chicago, Boeing's hometown
2. There were rumors that the Boeing AOG teams were working the mods BEFORE approval
3. If Boeing really was confident hat the mod would be approved, then it would have been prudent to get the work done in a timely manner.

Well it's sure not at the hangars. It's just sitting on the 10 Pad. It's got the red beacon lights on, so it's at least running on its own power. Perhaps they're letting it warm up, to see if anything starts, er, smoking?

Maybe they're getting it ready to go home?

It was moved so they could start up, run the engines and do some checks. About 1 hour in total. It's done about every 10-14 days as Jay mentioned.

We're usually notified a few days in advance before this happens.

Boeing's executive offices are in Chicago but that's about it. Everything else is done elsewhere.

I read somewhere on this forum that the battery mods have to be done where the airplane sits before it is allowed to fly.

The QR one at Heathrow has not moved yet. Looking forward to seeing her take to the sky when she's refitted with the new mod.

Just curious, who performs these checks and engine runs? Does LOT fly people in when this needs to be done or something?

Whoever LOT contracts with there during normal ops--I'm guessing UAL or AAL.

There's other contract Maintenance out there that may do that. UA and AA don't do any other airlines' work as far as I know. There are a few contract MTX companies at ORD. One or two do majority of the international airlines.
