US Airways NFL Team Aircraft, Post Merger

Sat Apr 20, 2013 5:59 pm

I know that US has for airplanes painted in the colors of the Philadelphia Eagles, the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Carolina Panthers, and the Arizona Cardinals. Will these planes get repainted in a team variation of the new AA paint scheme, once the merger is finalized?

If so, would AA also have a plane in Dallas Cowboys colors? AA has been flying the Cowboys for quite some time.

Lastly, what happens to the name of US Airways Center in Phoenix? Considering that AA has naming rights for the areanas in Dallas and Miami (and dropped the TWA sponsership of the football dome in St. Louis, post merger), I can't see it having 3 areanas with the AA name.

I guess since Doug Parker will take over as CEO, anything is possible...

Despicable!!

I wonder if we could see something in a Dolphins, Rams, Bears, or Giants scheme...

At the same time, would Parker consider doing away with the themed jets around NFL franchises entirely? What about the retro jets?

Regarding place names, could they call one the American Airlines Arena and the other American Center, or "AArena"?

Well, regarding the stadium names, currently the Miami Heat play in American Airlines Arena, and the Mavericks play in American Airlines center. So basically, as ckfred was wondering, are they going to have a third stadium (Suns currently US Airways center), and if so, what would they name it?

New American Arena

AA Arena

AArena

American Airlines Fieldhouse

American Airlines Sun Dome

Lots of possibilities

TWA and STL was dropped BUT that involved a BK of TWA where contracts were voided as necessary.

In this case, if US has naming rights, they are likely under contract with the Suns and the terms of this type of event are surely included in the contract.

Voiding the contract (keep in mind US pays the Suns a lot of money) would likely not be an option for the combined US/AA company without a high penalty

"AArena"

"AA" isn't in the Horton branding. Parker may bring it back, but probably not.

Maybe the Miami and Dallas sponsorships could be dumped in BK, but non-bankrupt US can't dump the Phoenix one. What could happen is U of Phx could take over the sponsorship and have a place to play their home basketball games.

At this point, they should probably get the N.E Patriots before B6 does.

AA was the official airline of the Patriots up until about a year ago.

DL is the official airline of the Rams, so you won't seen a livery from AA/US for them. I'm pretty sure UA is the official airline of the Bears, and they are the official airline of the Giants, so again no livery from AA/US. I don't think AA is the official airline of the Dolphins, in fact I'm not sure the Dolphins have an official airline at all.

Actually, the naming rights are through the City of Phoenix, who owns the facility. The Suns have about as much say in the name as the Mercury, which is likely none (other than it can't be named, say, Lakers Arena   )

Seeing as Southwest is the "official airline" of the Phoenix Suns, I doubt US is paying them anything.

Quoting Beardown91737 (Reply 4):

Not a chance. I could see GoDaddy making a bid for it if AA decides to drop the naming rights.

Quoting Beardown91737 (Reply 4):

Unlikely. Miami is one of the best-performing and most popular teams in the US, and Dallas is AA's "home".

How difficult would it be for AA to become the official airline? MIA is one of their best hubs...

I think the airline only wants planes painted in the colors of winners.

I was referring to a Bears logojet on AA. It would have to be UA, which doesn't do logojets like US does.

funny thing here. While US is the official airline of all of these, Delta carries PHL/AZO. They use to also carry CAR/PIT.

Correct - and UA also flies both teams on charters. There are ads at both Soldier Field and MetLife Stadium stating that UA is "proud to fly the (insert team here)".

In fact, UA is the official airline of all the major Chicago sports teams except Fire soccer (AA's lone sponsorship) and flies the Cubs, Bears, Sox, and (I think) Bulls as well.

If AA sponsors another arena it should definitely be in LAX when the Staples Center naming rights comes due for renewal. If its the typical 20 year contract, it should expire in 2019. It fits with AA's increased emphasis on LA on top of their already sizeable presence.

If the naming rights were expiring today, Staples wouldn't have much of a choice with their weakened fourth quarter sales and current efforts to downsize.

Doesn't matter if you do or not. All the print and broadcast media will refer to it as the American Arena(or....) and that's what AA would be paying for.

Actually, to my knowledge, DL is the official airline of the Patriots. DL flies the Pats around on a 763 during the season. B6 is the official airline of the Bruins and possibly the Celtics. I can definitely see a B6 plane titled "Black, Gold, and Blue" in Bruins colors some day.

A couple years ago I was flying a DL 752 from SEA-SLC and it had a Seahawks sticker right in the entryway. I always wondered how that got there.

It is my understanding that the Miami Heat use one of Miami Air's 734s in an all C layout. IMHO it would follow that the Dolphins use Miami Air as well, but their split C/Y 738s.

Keep in mind that the airline a team charters for their use and the actual official airline of the team are two different things. For the former the team picks the cheapest airline that works, for the latter the team picks the airline that pays them the most money. DL may fly the Patriots (as they do with many sports teams), but they can't go around advertising the team.

Technically B6 is the official airline of TD Gardens, not the Bruins.

don't forget that B6 is also the official airline of the Red Sox. Sign on the outfield wall, a painted Jet, and their new, beautiful spring training facility is called Jet Blue Park. Funny though, when the NESN broadcast is going into commercials, it shows WN picture next to the box score. Probably just a small ad.

Would love to see a Dolphins, Cowboys and Bears scheme. Not sure if they would have a Rams scheme since AA isn't all that much at STL anymore. In addition - would love to see (but unlikely) Reno Air, TWA and Air California retro jet - never did see any additional state planes after Nevada and Arizona - such as North Carolina or Penn, so I doubt we will see a Florida, Illinois or Texas - I am sure the Star A319s will become One World

Yes it will take time. Just like Candlestick in SFO and many other venues that have changed names. However I'm not only talking about individual angelenos. I'm referring to the media(radio, tv, print, internet), and then there are the nationwide events like playoffs and the Grammys that are seen by non-angelenos who don't have the emotional attachment to the Staples name.
