Southwest 2187 Diversion To O'Hare

A Southwest Airlines flight from Charlotte, N.C., landed at O'Hare instead of Midway this evening as a precaution after an indication of a possible mechanical problem.

Southwest Flight No. 2187 landed without incident, said a Department of Aviation spokeswoman. She had no other information.

I'm in the west suburbs of Chicago and have a good view of one of ORD's approaches- I actually noticed this flight on it's final. It struck me as weird at the moment because inbound MDW traffic just don't come by here, and additionally- it's gear was down. Even ORD bound traffic doesn't have gear down at this point in their approach. Hopped onto here to see if there was any mention of this, but there wasn't, so I disregarded it until I happened upon the Tribune article.
Never has gravity been so uplifting.

They must have needed the extra runway length for landing.

If they needed extra length maybe it was either flaps issues or brakes issues...

Who handles aircraft servicing and MX in this case? Where do they put the plane?

The Diversion was handled by United....At terminal 1

Ironically this is now the oldest 737-300 and the oldest of all a/c in the SWA fleet-----it's first flight was on February 2nd 1985

They did a go around at MDW at the altitude that is around where gear is typically deployed.

I would guess that they did not get a proper indication for all three gear deployed. The articles seem to indicate it was an indication problem, so it might be a faulty proximity switch. Typical procedure would be to go around and perform an alternate extension ( pull the lawnmower rip cords on a 737) . Hopefully that would fix the problem. If it was a 737-300 they could go look through the sight glass to check if the gear is deployed over the wheel well.

Anytime you have a gear problem long runways are your friend which means MDW is out as a suitable alternate. Airlines have agreements with other carriers everywhere that they operate and file as alternates in the flight plans. It probably isn't the first WN diversion to ORD with the size of their ops at MDW.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

You are correct this is not the first diversion of a WN flight to ORD it has happened in the past and United handles Southwest diversions at O'Hare and normally Southwest diversions go into gate B1 however yesterdays flight went into gate C21 here at Terminal 1. Southwest also in the past has used United's hangar but Southwests sends over their own maintenance people to fix their planes when they are diverted to ORD.

I've been out there on a few occasions and seen Southwest at United's gates and use their facilities to take care of what's wrong with the aircraft when they land there. It's hard to be able to do any MTX outside depending on what you need to replace or tasks to perform. UA, AA, and other airlines that have hangars have done the same for other airlines when their aircraft broke at ORD. Same goes for business jets too.
