That was quick.

I suppose Boeing and ET had started installing the battery mods some time ago on that frame?

If nothing else, a whole bunch of engineers around the world are breathing easier and are back doing what they thought they might be doing for the last few months.

Grounding thus was January 16, 2013 - April 27, 2013 or a bit more than three months.

Using timeanddate.com we get:

Quote:

From and including: Wednesday, January 16, 2013
To, but not including : Saturday, April 27, 2013

It is 101 days from the start date to the end date, but not including the end date

Or 3 months, 11 days excluding the end date

101 days can be converted to one of these units:

8,726,400 seconds
145,440 minutes
2424 hours
14 weeks (rounded down)

I'm sure it's not only myself that is surprised the problem was resolved this quickly.

Let's just hope that new containment system doesn't get used too soon!

With AI 787s operating predominantly out of DEL, that's going to be quite a major 787 airport in the short term.....until other airports elsewhere in the world, catch up......

Congrats to ET and Boeing.

This is a huge milestone. Someone had to be first and I tip my hat to ET for taking the lead.

Per the blog "All things 787", the next airline should be QR then next month AI and UA. But we will be well into June before all are flying. We should see several new airlines flying this year too. At a production of 7 per month.

I find it strange that JAL and ANA are the last to return the 787 to service when in fact their a/c are the first to be modified.......why do they need hundreds of test flights?

I was thinking the same thing - how are ET and AI getting their 787s in the air long before UA? I was thinking maybe JL and NH have larger fleets of 787s and maybe that had something to do with it, but seems odd?

Japan has a strong emphasis on getting things right. Since they have the largest fleet, they want to make sure this fix is a right fix!

It does seem odd that ET has the first revenue flights and it does raise questions. I suspect that as they had no or few problems with their a/c, perhaps their battery system was a later edition, having a small fleet, a sound operation including as to maintenance, limited ops over large waterways, perhaps they were willing to go first, all could be factors. They should be very proud to be the first back with 787 ops.

Many Airlines can not just put a fleet back into the schedule over night. For example JL and ANA will need longer to stand down the contingency they had put in place due to the grounding and ramp up B787 operations again.

I'm not sure, to be honest. If I were to take a stab at it, I would say because both JL and NH had aircraft adversely effected by the 787 issues. Because of this, I'm guessing that's the reason why they're not operating it right away.

They didn't stop building them and orders weren't cancelled. They just get the delivery money a few months later than they would have. Income will now be greater than expected for the rest of the year because of delayed deliveries. Boeing shifts money between accounts billions at a time.

The reasons have been discussed in other threads but here's a quick refresher:

JCAB requires 1 test flight.

ANA and JAL both prefer airplanes over simulators for initial and recurrent training, even though simulators will be acceptable for everybody else (UAL, LAN, ETH, LOT and QTR)

The extra flights also allow ANA and JAL to show their main customers--the Japanese people--that the airplanes are safe. Nobody else in the world cares that much.

In general it's the way things work in Japan.
