Republic Seeks DCA Slot Slide

Mon Apr 29, 2013 9:47 pm

Some might recall that last year Republic Airlines requested the DOT for authority to amend the designated destination "slot slide" of two Midwest Express DCA-MKE slots to either Omaha Nebraska, or Madison Wisconsin.
Republic stated market conditions necessitated the change following Frontiers significant reduction of service at MKE.

Now Republic is back to the DOT and seeks a further slot slide, by having the DOT authorize the added flexibility to utilize the the Omaha slot to Kansas City instead.
Republic states based on market conditions it seeks to bolster its service to MCI and request the flexibility in order to maintain the DCA slot.

I guess F9 found running OMA against US Air not too appealing.

I'd been wondering what was going to happen to the OMA-DCA route once the ERJ-190s left. I certainly couldn't see A319s picking it up, between the US/RW competition and the simple excess capacity they provided (the 190s offering the most seats per aircraft on the route ever, as far as I know- I can't remember if the 99-seat 717s were ever in service on it before RW took over with the ERJ-170s). It's certainly kind of a disappointment because my family has used the flight pretty much since it was launched in 1995, but then again, such is life in the industry. On the other hand, I'm curious what MSN offers for F9 that Omaha doesn't.

Or, on a slightly more positive note, that demand at MCI may be higher for a restored frequency?

The question that intrigues me is what happens with separation. The slots don't belong to Frontier, they belong to Republic (ex-Midwest), and it's tough to think they will simply gift them to Frontier, or even if they can.

Right now, F9 is operating DEN, MSN, MCI and OMA from DCA. MSN, MCI and OMA are Republic's slots. Are all of those exclusive to the respective destinations or are any unrestricted slots?

Good point...I overlooked that. I guess time will tell what the end result is.

The OMA-DCA flights on both F9 and US are at almost identical times! US was running this route 2x daily but dropped it down to 1x daily at exactly the same time as the F9 flight. I didn't understand this at all because now there is no morning OMA-DCA flight that I found always to be full and expensive.

I wonder if this whole thing is just a game and US is trying to run F9 out the door and if US will restore OMA-DCA to 2x daily if F9 leaves the route?

One crazy situation if you ask me!

US Airways dominates in many city pairs like this. I was in CAE few years back and US one way walk up fare was $750.00 and we sold it. US will play the squeeze them out game and when F9 moves this as requested they will most likely return with two flights. F9 keeps moving flights around with the latest move of flights in and out of TTN seems to be working for them.
