Tue Apr 30, 2013 11:32 am

JAL has just announced it is deploying the 787-8 to SYD from December 1.

Very exciting news and wasn't expecting this so soon.

NRT-HEL will get also get 787s from July 1 in a new route for JAL.

787s will also be deployed on:
-NRT-DEL from July 12
-NRT-Moscow from Sep 1
-Haneda-SFO from Sep 1
-NRT-BKK from Dec 2

Existing 787-8 routes recommence on Jun 1.

Here's a full story on the deployment to SYD of the JAL 787s.

Sydney to get JAL’s 787s

Japan Airlines is set to become the first airline to commercially operate Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner to Sydney when flights from Tokyo Narita are upgraded to the revolutionary aircraft from December 1.

JAL’s 787-8s have not yet taken to the sky after safety issues with onboard lithium ion batteries forced the grounding of all 787s worldwide in mid-January this year.

Is this replacing a 772?

Isn't the SFO route also an equipment change from the B772ER?

They will suddenly have a few spare B772ER

- I would expect some of the older ones to start leaving the fleet, same with NH.

Interesting news. I would have thought Jetstar would have been the first to SYD. Jetstar's first 787 should be entering final assembly in two weeks. There will be 49 aircraft ahead of it to be delivered but its possible that it will be in service before Dec 1. Not sure if SYD will be one of the first routes though. I remember something about MEL-SIN...

If you think about it this is a downgrade in capacity.

Is NRT-SYD-NRT not performing well at the capacity it has with a 772?

This is excellent news.

They probably will be. QF said about a month ago that they're still expecting the first delivery in August, though that seems a little ambitious to me.

We don't know what their plans are, but they'll certainly be operating something out of SYD by December if they plan to have 2-3 planes by the end of the year.

J capacity will remain pretty steady overall (at the moment we get a mix of 56J, 28J and 63J aircraft), but Y capacity is certainly on the way down. The timing seems a bit strange to me, given that the summer peak is when they'll be able to fill the extra capacity of the 77E.

I'll make a bet that with School Holidays and the Christmas break, HNL or DPS will be the first 787 destination for JQ.

Maybe that's why QF is leaving the 744 on SYD-NRT while JAL directs more traffic to JQ. It'll be interesting to see if JAL re-starts BNE with one of the spare aircraft.

And that reflects the commercial viability of NRT-SYD. J performs well with strong business, trade, investment, and diplomatic ties between the two countries, but Y is as much as a blood bath as every other flight from Australia to Japan. This is a good move IMHO, and should help JL to strengthen the long-term financial certainty of the route.

I hope that they do, but I'm not going to hold my breath. I know that JL said that the flight would be resumed once they got the 787s, but I somehow think that they were being polite. The Queensland business community has been lobbying for the flight to be re-instated since it was withdrawn, but I'm not sure how much premium demand there would be. Given that Y yields are trash, premium traffic is important to sustaining Aus-Jp flights.

I flew BNE-NRT-BNE back in August 2009, and I remember that outbound the load was about 60% in Y but coming back it was close to 100%.

60% on a rough flight every now and then is not too bad if the flight inbound is 100%. I doubt they will restart the route with the spare aircraft they have unless it was a B763. I think the 772 might be too big to re-start the moment. 788 would be a perfect fit to restart!

Seems logical though I'd love to see something a bit different like SYD-YVR.

Agreed. It will be interesting to see what QF decides to do with NRT when the time comes -- I would suggest that they would be better off utilising JQ to add Y capacity in peak periods and moving towards smaller, more premium aircraft as well.

I was under the impression the 1st JQ B787 route was announced SIN-AKL?

The B787-8s will gradually replace the Airbus A330s currently used on Jetstar’s long-haul international routes from Singapore to Melbourne, Auckland and Beijing. The new aircraft will be configured with Business and Economy Class cabins.

The aircraft are apparently now coming to Australia rather than going to 3K in SIN, which was the plan when those comments were made.

A lot has changed in the past year -- new CEO, reduced order, Scoot, QF's shift away from SIN etc. I expect the long term focus to be on opening up a broader range of low-freqency nonstops into Asia from Australia and allowing the 3K operation to complement that rather then being the focus.

Seeing them in Japan is quite a sight, even on the ground. I was lucky to catch a JL 787 departure from NRT while i was here last year.
