Long AC Jazz Q400 Nonstop YYZ-YYC

Thu May 02, 2013 3:37 am

I expect this was a ferry flight based on the 7000-series flight number. Nonstop YYZ-YYC Q400, 5 hrs. 18 min. Some new Q400 routes were started in western Canada on May 1 so probably related to that.

As a sidenote, t believe the last regularly scheduled nonstop propeller service YYZ-YYC was a daily AC (then TCA) L-1049G Super Constellation in 1961 with block time of 6:45. It was replaced April 15, 1961 by a DC-8 with a block time of 4:00, almost 3 hours faster. Fifty-two years later the fastest YYZ-YYC block times are 10 to 15 minutes longer than half a century ago.

However that one daily DC-8 in 1961 was the only YYZ-YYC nonstop. Now there are up to 22 daily on AC and WS combined..

No doubt rotating the fleet from west to east etc. All 21 ordered Q400's are now in service, but the 2 separate networks east and west don't connect with revenue flights. Perhaps once Q400 service expands to YWG they will in due course operate YWG-YQT (as they do with the CRJ) to connect east and west and rotate the fleet with revenue flights.

TransCapital flew a Dash-7 last winter YYC-YTZ on a ferry flight.

Active Jazz CRJ fleet incidently is down to just 28 now (from a peak of 58). Source atdb.
I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

That seems way too long for a Dash 8.
Even if it is the 400 series, it's still a small commuter prop - just longer.
The Constellation had a wider interior (still a narrow body), larger seats and was designed for longer flights.
I like the Dash 8 and all but wouldn't want to be on one for more than 2 hours.

You can't book this flights as far as i can tell, its just a ferry operation between the 2 Q400 operations.
Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

It was a ferry flight indeed. Continued on to YVR I believe.

Quoting Airontario (Reply 4):
connect east and west and rotate the fleet with revenue flights.

It looks like a lot of the eastern Q400 flights have been pulled down and replaced with Q100. Only a few frequencies to N. Ontario left. Now seeing at most 1 a day Q400 to any one location through the summer. There was also a previous thread about CRJ substituted for Q400 into JFK.

Probably looking to compete with Encore in the West but leaving themselves open for a competitive advantage for Porter in the East.

As of the 1st of May all DH1 aircraft have been shifted east leaving the entire western region operated primarily by the DH3 variant. With the ongoing removal of the CRJ1 and CRJ2 the fleet will be down to 25 from a peak of 57 a few years ago which helps explain the shifting of additional DH4 higher speed aircraft west. WS Encore is no doubt part of the reason the DH4 are being moved, it's more likely AC realizing that yields are better and the capacity better utilized in the west.

I don't imagine AC can do much about PD, other than accept they are a market player and compete on frequency. Both have their own markets they are trying to cater to. For AC it's network connectivity. PD on the other hand has YTZ and it's O&D.

AC is going through a transformation with Rouge, the transfer of E175 to Sky Regional and the introduction of Premium Economy on the 5 new B773.
