Etihad To Lease 747-8F Freighter

Thu May 02, 2013 9:01 pm

As Etihad pursues it cargo growth ambitions it has announced it will lease a 747-8F freighter in full Etihad livery from Atlas Air effective this month.

The 747-8F lease will complement existing 747-400F from Atlas Air. With the 747-8F Etihad's all cargo will compromise 9 widebodies.

Interesting.

EK SkyCargo just cancelled their last five 747-8Fs (which they would have leased via DAE after originally selling them the 10 they had ordered directly from Boeing), so looks like EK will standardize on the 777 Freighter.

Atlas Air will take delivery of its last 748 freighter on order this month, perhaps this one will join the Etihad fleet.

Per Wikipedia, EK operates four 747-400Fs leased from Atlas and TNT.

Etihad Crystal has such a young fleet what with A330-200Fs, 777-200Fs and now these.

in full Etihad livery

This will certainly be something to behold.

A recent interview with the CEO of KL (see luchtvaartnieuws.nl) sounds not promising.

Quote:
En wat de Boeing 747-8 betreft: die kan in zijn economics niet op tegen de Boeing 777. De Triple is gewoon het beste toestel in dat marktsegment.

Translated for other people:

Quote:
As for the Boeing 747-8 concerned, it can not beat the economics of the Boeing 777. The Triple is just the best airframe in that market segment.

That refers to the 748I, not the F.
Btw, I think that this man is no true expert, since when is the "Triple" in the segment of the 748? Thats exactly as true as the 787 being in the same segment as the "Triple".

Correct, KL doesn't need a freighter. The 748i is the only theoretical candidate for the KL fleet.

What he meant to say is: the 777 can do almost all of the 747 missions with lower costs.

Yes, I've read that interview. The 747-8i and A380 were basically ruled out.

They do operate 4 744ERFs though. Which are quite new and don't replacing, that is correct. But how about MP? they operate a 744BCF and 6 MD11F's. Some people expect AF/KL will just let that division slowly go extinct, but is the cargo market so bad they will go from 11 freighters to zero? Of course, 77W's, 787s and A350s will take a lot of belly cargo, but I'm still not convinced KL won't need any new freighters in the future.

I think the MP brand will eventually disappear.

Well, the same CEO stated he can see a KL future without freighters. I take that as a hint. There is no suitable replacement for the 747 Combi anyway.

MD-11s are being phased out, I think two or so have left over the past months. One leased-out 744BCF has been returned by Air Cargo Germany.

Sadly too big for KLM, especially after entering the AF partnership.

In that same interview Hartman came up with the answer: a relatively small core of freighters, augmented with wetleased capacity when needed. IMHO this will result in a small 744F fleet, perhaps a few more specimen than KL has now, with the MD11F's gone as they approach the end of their service life. The ERF's should have at least another 10+ years left, so if AFKL ever decides to order a replacement, it problably won't be in this decade.
