Which hub does NW have a larger presence, DTW or MSP? From which one do they offer more international destinations? Which hub is more profitable for NW?

I'm not an insider, but I believe I remember reading that DTW is the largest of NW's operations based on enplaned passengers. And DTW most certainly leads in international departures.

I am also guessing that profitability is based largely on two factors (beyond normal operational factors): 1) volume and 2) market share, i.e., the degree to which the carrier has made it a fortress hub.

I'm certain that some of our friends from NW will have more to add...

DTW is the largest NW hub. MSP is second largest.

747-400s are basically the only 747s at DTW

747-200s work the MSP-AMS/MSP-NRT flights.

MSP is a much nicer hub for now.....until the new DTW terminal opens in Dec 2001. I can't wait because DTW will be a perfect hub for almost all the routes I fly.

I might even go thru DTW just for the fun of using a brand new airport!!!!!

Mbmbos and Nwa747-400 were both correct in saying that Detroit is the largest Northwest hub, and it has the most international destinations. It will become even larger at the end of 2001, when NW officially opens its new Midfield Terminal, a huge 99 gate complex in the center of DTW.

On that note, several MSP officials have become jealous of that new terminal, fearing that some routes that NW now operates only out of MSP to Canadian cities like YYC, YEG, and YWG, and flights to Western cities like SJC, SMF, and GEG will be moved to DTW as they will now have the space for those flights. MSP officials are trying to keep up with DTW by adding several mainline and commuter gates for NW on the A/B/C (formerly known as Green) concourse and extending the crosswind runway to 12,000 feet from its current 11,000 foot length. The additional footage would allow for flights to places like PVG, HKG, and PEK. There has also been talk of a MSP midfield terminal, located across the runway from the current complex. This is in MSP's master plan, but the idea has not taken shape as of yet. It will be interesting to see what NW chooses to do once the DTW Midfield Terminal is opened.
