Why doesn't this surprise me? Recently, I've been hearing about AZ workers doing some very sketchy things recently.....

Only 6 months in jail ? Id give them 6 years . Loss of any pension rights and banned from ever holding an airside pass again .

"The passengers who lost their luggage have been reimbursed. We are the victims here."

No dear the passengers are still the victims not AZ !! Their personal belongings were stolen. What a stupid statement to make but then again this is AZ

Good! Though I agree that in a position of trust like that, they could have got longer sentences.

AZ delayed my baggage once (first and last time with them), when I finally got it, it had an "Alitalia Seal". So I guess they can put that sticker on 1 minute before handing it over to me?

Six years in jail for theft? That's a little harsh in my opinion. But I think they definitely deserve at least six months, up to a year in jail. They hold a position that can only function with the trust of the flying public, and they need to be made examples of.

I also agree with stripping them of their employment benefits and the privilege of ever again working in a SIDA zone.

Six year may be a bit too much, especially considering the already overcrowded jails Italy has. However, I agree that a important sentence would also serve as a warning, and it would also be of some comfort for the passengers who fly every day (especially those who had something stolen from their bags before). One thing they should require from these people, more than jail, is to make restitution of what they took.

If it is so easy to take things out of baggage, the fear is that it is just as easy to put things into baggage...

Amazing they were arrested. The carabinieri could have gotten in on the deal...in all seriousness, none of this is surprising. Of all the countries and places I have traveled to in the world, Italy ranks as my least favorite country because someone is always trying to pull one over on you. Hotels, restaurants, rental car companies, taxi drivers, you name it. One always has to watch out for being ripped off or falling prey to scams.

In my 8 days in Italy two years ago, I:

- had Avis trying to charge me twice the contract amount, which took over an hour of negotiations with the manager to come within $5 of my contracted amount.

- had a car in the Naples area try to intentionally sideswipe me on the highway going 100kmh to create a fraudulent insurance claim.

- was approached by tons of scammers at the Vatican for "private tours".

- experienced some of the rudest service professionals in my travels.

I have also had friends get mugged and pick pocketed in Milan and Rome. I think the Italian mentality is that if a tourist is dumb enough to get scammed or cheated then one deserves to have it happen to them.

So this story about baggage the sounds about right to me.

That would be quite harsh when at least around here you can get that from crimes like manslaughter if you have no earlier criminal history.

Anyway, nothing surprising about this to be honest...

Exactly, going to any country with harsh penalties for drug smuggling I wouldn't take hold luggage just to be safe.

To me, so many luggage thefts suggests grossly incompetent management, supervision and security as well as payoffs by criminals to them. Such criminal behavior is unacceptable for reasons well beyond the thefts themselves, and indeed raises potential serious risks of terrorism of plane flights.

A ramp worker handling luggage should always believe they would be busted if caught in a theft by their supervisors, there should be follow ups as to any reported thefts as to who had contact with the luggage, there should be frequent spot inspections of any containers ramp staff who have contact with luggage when laving secure areas to discourage theft. Supervisors should be rotated as to assignments and subject to financial checks to make sure they are not on the take. Airlines and airports should terminate or use penalty clauses in contracts of ramp staff or contract companies.

People should also use common sense and not put valuable items like money, photo and tech equipment, jewelry and electronic items in checked bags and have them in their carry ons.

It depends on the opportunity. Some people will feel they can get away with it. If you are not at top of scale, you aren't really making that much. And a lot of places have been outsourced and have rotating personnel, you don't know who is who. But these are employees of an airline and it makes us look really bad. In this economy, why risk losing your job especially if you are topped out? It's not worth it at all. But some idiots will risk it for the money.

This also shows another benefit of containerized luggage - less individual handling of luggage in unsupervised spaces. In the baggage hall, supervision and security is better than in the rear hold of an MD81.

That's my big fear as well. The only time I've ever had anything stolen from my case was at MIA* I was on my way to Ecuador. Ecuador border Columbia, and is therefore a big drug smuggling country. Basically, smugglers presume that people coming to the USA from Ecuador look less suspicious than those coming from Columbia.

On the way back to the USA I was pretty terrified that someone could put something into my case, just as a kind soul at MIA had taken something out of it on my way down.

Prior to boarding my name was called over the PA, maybe I've been upgraded? I go up to the desk, "Senhor, please come with me". We go down to the ramp (no kidding) and walk over to my suit case. There are police all around. Oh S***. "Senhor, your case has been selected for a random search". Thank effing God.

Anyway, it was a "random" hand inspection. The biggest relief I took out of it was that if US CBP found anything untoward in my case, I could legitimately claim that it wasn't in there last time I knew, and that the Ecuadorian Policia could back me up on this!

*My mother had items stolen out of her luggage in DXB last month. The latest we heard EK were "investigating" the situation.
