What he means is that the A350 has an additional of three pallets of cargo space per aircraft. Just like the 77W, the A35J will have more cargo space than the 747.

Not really. His statement in the article is true, but brings nothing new to the ones who have followed the civilian aviation market lately. And there are more very cargo friendly airplanes out there.  .

Actually, for Airbus improving the cargo is a nice benefit for their customers. This brings excellent cargo to a slightly smaller airframe than the 77W. Airlines such as EK will benefit tremendously.

Newer aircraft are more efficent, basically offloading fuel and returning the payload.

True, but not everyone needs the 8400nm range of the A35J. In case of BA, the A35J will offer more usable cargo space than their current 747 aircraft.

@Ruscoe The title of this thread is misleading, it has nothing to do with a freighter. An A350 freighter hasn't been announced yet. The article is just about the extra cargo space (three additional pallets) in the belly of the A350-1000.

Three additional pallets compared to what?

IAG Cargo sounds like they manage the cargo side of the operations using the mainline fleet vice dedicated cargo aircraft.

Both -900R and -900F have not been officially launched yet. Airbus will first focus on the -800, -900 and -1000.

I do not believe Airbus ever "committed" to a launch date for the A350-900R or A350-900F. As i recall, it was more a case of "we will of course develop a freighter model at some future point and that model would allow us to also develop a ULH passenger model".

The A350-900R and -900F will be developed from the A350-1000, in effect being a shrink of this higher weight platform.

As the A350-1000 won't now go into service until 2017, I don't really see either of these aircraft being likely this decade.

The freighter will surely come at some point.

Not convinced how much justification there is for the -900R. But as a straight shrink, like the 777L, it should be a low-cost iteration

When the A350-1000 is out all the pieces for a A350-900R are in place, give it a year after the A350-1000. If Airbus do want that part of the market, why wait, to be friendly to Boeing?
An A350-800R should be even easier as the A350-800 seems to be shrink of the A350-900.

I think it depends on if an airline wants to order it and production slot availability.

The freighter is a different case.

Airbus has already (effectively) launched the A350-800R with the 259t MTOW option.

The A350 fuselage is made of CFRP and the 9-abreast configuration makes it more comfortable to packages...thus an "extremely cargo-friendly aircraft”.

What other demands?

A32XNEO is another team, but anyway should all of them be in service at that date.

As the planing is now the A350-8/9/10 should also be in service by than.

Why should the A350-900R be later than the B777-X8LR?

I do not find the Boeing program less demanding. There is the B737MAX, the B787-9 and 10, the B777-X9 (perhaps X8) and than the X8LR.

Most wide body aircraft have the OPTION to heat, or cool the cargo bays.
Most wide bodies have heating in the bulk cargo.
But the option is rarely taken up in the other two holds.
I have seen an A330 and B777 with fwd cargo heating,
but never with air conditioning, which I know is an option on the A330.
