Current & Future 787 Routes #5

Sun May 05, 2013 5:36 am

With the 787 flying again, good time to restart this thread... Who would have thought that Dubai would be the queen of the 787 skies (6 of 7 current flights) given Emirates ordered a total of 0 aircraft. this is all temporary of course! LHR will be the lucky one in the next two weeks with ETH and QAT on their way.

Cheers

What about BA and JQ? Any info on those just yet?

How would the 787 fair for, say, LHR - DBN or LHR - MLE?
And for JQ say, SYD - DVO or MEL - PPT?

BA have said that the initial routes will be LHR-EWR, LHR-IAD, LHR-YYC and LHR-YYZ. No dates have yet to be announced. There will be some familiarization flights in Europe first.

QF changes its mind often on where to send the initial 787s. The latest iteration of the master plan has them replacing all A330s of JQ, which would be returned to QF to in turn replace its aging domestic 767s. Current JQ A330 routes include SYD-HNL, CNS-NRT, CNS-KIX, SIN-KIX, SIN-PEK, MEL-SIN, SIN-AKL, MEL-BKK, SYD-HKT, OOL-NRT, OOL-KIX amongst others.

Ah, thank you. Have the destinations for the familiarisation flights been announced or is that just random? I'm assuming they'll replace a few of the Euro 767s?

Thu May 09, 2013 6:03 am

ANA today announced resumption of 787 international routes (FRA, PEK and SJC ) from 1 June 2013. SEA is also resuming but with 777.

ANA also starting new 787 intl routes: HND-TSA, NRT-PEK, both from 1 June 2013 and NRT-PVG from 1 August 2013.

All new routes are short-haul to make better efficient use of the fleet in between long-haul flights.

Cheers

Looks like LAN is almost ready to re-start 787 commercial ops on the SCL-EZE route with its first fixed aircraft. 22x weekly planned during familiarization period before launching SCL-LIM-LAX, SCL-LIM and SCL-MAD-FRA later this year.

Quoting AVENSAB727 (Reply 7):

It wont be for a while. The current fleet of 6 is almost maxed out for the proposed routes (starting 1 Aug 2013). It takes 3 aircraft to do the IAH-DEN-NRT-DEN-IAH-LOS-IAH loop and it also takes 3 aircraft for the LAX-NRT-LAX-PVG-LAX loop. There is room for a LAX-Domestic-LAX flight in the second loop if UA wanted to stretch that loop. Also LOS is 5x weekly so in theory could fly somewhere else for 2x weekly (unlikely to be attractive though).

New routes for UA will then need to wait for the next batch of aircrafts to arrive. Aircraft #7 is due for delivery in August/September 2013. Aircraft #8 in October 2013. Aircraft #9 in late December 2013. So that should give you an indication of new route announcements.

Ok, but this is an sCO order, so the new routes will be from either LAX, IAH or EWR.

Not necessarily, there's DEN-NRT.

I think UA is not going to wait for the sUA 787-8s to start arriving in 2016 to begin the replacement of their 3 class 763s. UA has two more sCO 787-8s arriving this year and three more next year. Then that's it for the 787-8s until the first of the sUA 787-8s start arriving in 2016. The remaining five sCO 787-8s order due this year and next may be used to retire the five oldest, 1991 models, three class 763s.

If not replacing some three class 763s then I can see the next five 787-8s perhaps taking over some of the following:

IAH-LHR (1 or 2 daily), SEA-NRT, LAX-LHR, IAH-AMS

The 787-9s start arriving in 2015, that's where I think we will see some growth opportunities. The economy, and hopefully UA, will be stronger by then allowing for some new routes. Most likely Asia and Latin America.

Looks like LAN is almost ready to re-start 787 commercial ops on the SCL-EZE route with its first fixed aircraft. 22x weekly planned during familiarization period

The initial routes during this month will be SCL-EZE and/or SCL-LIM.

LAN may receive its fourth 787 (CC-BBD) by late June which will enable LAN to launch daily 787 service on the SCL-MAD-FRA route by 08JUL13. LAN may also receive its fifth 787 (CC-BBE) by late July or early August; however that a/c may eventually be deployed on a route not mentioned.

Thank you for this fantastic thread! With all the frequent updates it is really extremely valuable!

Just one minor detail: the ICAO code for Qatar Airways is "QTR" not "QAT". Not that it lessens the value of your list in the least, I just noticed, in case you want to modify.

Looks like United has added a second inaugural flight tomorrow May 20th. In addition to IAH-ORD, there will be an IAH-EWR flight leaving at about the same time. This was not part of the original plan.

UA 001 IAH-ORD (11:00-13:35)
UA 080 IAH-EWR (11:30-17:00)

Whereas there is a UA 002 return flight from ORD, there no return commercial flight from EWR on May 20th loaded currently on the 787....

IAH-DEN starts on Tue May 21st.

The return flight UA 081 is scheduled for May 21st. So looks like the aircraft will overnight in EWR. Perhaps some internal UA events planned in EWR on 20/21.

N27903 is currently scheduled to fly the UA 001/002 flights to/from ORD
N27901 is currently scheduled for the UA 080/081 flights to/from EWR.

They're celebrating 25 years of the EWR hub, technically Terminal C as CO established the EWR hub in 1986 with the merger of NY Air and PeoplExpress into CO. CO's Terminal C opened on May 21st, 1988. They're hosting a public event at 11:30am tomorrow, as well as a VIP event. The 787 is obviously going to be part of the events.

MEX is no airline. You mean AMX = Aeromexico. And there are other updates for Aeromexico:

Mexico City – Paris CDG eff 15OCT13 3 weekly (daily from 04NOV13)
Mexico City – Madrid eff 26APR14 1 weekly
Mexico City – Buenos Aires eff 05FEB14 1 weekly (4 weekly from 14MAR14, 5 weekly from 20MAR14, 7 weekly from 17APR14)

Aeromexico plans to add 4th weekly frequency on Mexico City – Tijuana – Tokyo Narita route, starting 30MAR14. Boeing 787-8 aircraft to operate this route.

RE: Current & Future 787 Routes #5

Tue May 28, 2013 4:34 am

For all the test dates I have looked at in 2014, Qatar Airways website (and other fare finding websites) currently shows no 787's scheduled for services operating to LHR. Is this because QR are yet to update the schedules that far in advance or are they planning to replace the daily 787 with the A330?

Also is there any further information on the change, of the QR900/901 rotation to Perth, from the 777 to the 787? This was going to occur in February but the 787 grounding obviously delayed it from happening. I did read an article (from April) where a QR spokesperson confirmed the change would occur at some stage but did not confirm a date. Has there been any further confirmation?

Article: http://www.ausbt.com.au/qatar-to-res...ing-787-s-delayed-australian-debut

Its all speculation at this stage but QTR is getting 6 more 787s between now and 31 Dec 2013 so they'll need to go on one route or another. There's word some of them will be going to the US. Perth remains a high priority target as they would like to offer he full kangaroo route with the 787 product.

The first of this year's frames should be delivered within 30 days so we'll know soon enough which way they're going (more Europe or Oceania/USA).

By the sounds of it, LHR should also see regular 787 service from ETH, CSN and BAW 787's soon, so 5 separate carriers hopefully by end of 2013 (on top of AI and QTR currently).

Quoting hkcanadaexpat (Reply 27):

If I remember correctly Qatar Airways' original plan was to use the 787 on both daily MUC services, on both daily FRA services, daily to ZRH, daily to GVA. Currently only one of the MUC flight and the daily ZRH flight are operated, the others seem not even to be in the plans anymore.

QTR currently serves MUC 2x daily, FRA 1x daily, LHR 1x daily and ZRH 1x daily. FRA will go double daily on July 1st with the delivery of A7-BCD. Haven't seen anything about GVA yet but there is another frame (A7-BCE) coming in July with 4 more later this year.

Air Canada gave a first glimpse of its potential 787 routes in yesterday's investor day presentation (see pg. 20)
They've really widened the net to include any and everything at this early stage.

YUL -> PEK/BEY
YYZ -> ICN/KIX/EZE/GIG/ACC/LOS/DEL/DME/IST/BRU
YYC -> PEK
YVR -> BNE/FRA

> Regional: HND-PEK (daily), NRT-PEK (daily), HND-TSA (daily)
> Long-Haul: HND-FRA (daily), NRT-SJC (5 weekly)

And so on , and on........... Sorry, can't decipher all those letters/numbers..........   Must admit, though, to being fascinated by the 'bigger picture.'

Less than ten years ago most of us tended to assume that 'long-haul' would remain in the province of the 'big fours' for the foreseeable future. We now appear to be watching the onset of increasing numbers of (profitable) 'long thin routes for twins.' To their credit, Airbus pretty well pioneered this trend with the A330/A340 (and the former seems to remain quite competitive) - but, with around 800 orders already, the 788/789 seems to be driving a coach and horses through the traditional 'four-engine' long-haul market? And the proposed '777W' (or whatever you call it  ), seating 400-plus, looks like 'finishing the job' once it arrives?

Airbus are, of course, trying to do the same with the A350, but they've 'left it late' - they currently have no option but to concentrate on the 'middle option,' the A350-9. That will leave them 'sandwiched' between two existing Boeing types, the 787 and the 777 - and probably with no spare capacity available to counter the likely final 'jumbo-killer,' the larger, still longer-range 777W............

So the likely situation, in not too many years' time, would appear to be that the 748 range will be selling 'freighters only,' and the A380 will be out of production; with most airlines switching their existing orders for both aeroplanes to 777Ws or A350-1000s respectively?

Apologies if I've missed this somewhere but wondering if ANA has announced a date for the 787's return on SEA? Cheers, Rowan

I imagine this is a one off flight or maybe a training flight but I noticed a 787 today flying between AUS and IAH. I think this would qualify as the shortest 787 route at just 140 miles.

These are test flights that carry no passengers. UAL has been using the IAH-AUS route profusely to test fixes prior to putting the 787s back in commercial service.

All,

Although the Sky Team PC Travel Desk I have is up to date, and shows no 787 on the route, I have just booked flight CZ3503 (CAN-SHA) via C-trip where it shows a 787 on Sunday 14th July.

At the moment, there aren't even any 787 photos at either of the main Shanghai airports in the database. I am sure this will change shortly.

Also, I was originally planning to take the 380 CAN-PVG which departs around the same time, really found the 787 by accident. Here's hoping it transpires.....

Booking this for the 1st week of August! it´s gonna be one of those crazy flying days we a-nutters do.

BCN-RYG on Bleughyanair, then train to Oslo Central, then onwards to Gardemoen for the Dreamliner flight to BCN all in the same day   and just 150€ total.

Can´t wait!
