Rumored DL 737/757 Interior Upgrades

Wed May 08, 2013 4:57 pm

I have been hearing a few rumors that DL will be doing some interior upgrades on its 737 and 757 fleets.

The first rumor is that the PMNW 5600-series 752s will be getting AVOD installed; this would be in addition to the already confirmed 753 fleet.

The second rumor is that DL will be installing new pivot bins (Heath Tecna Project Amber I presume) on its 737 and 757 fleet. If true, I don't expect all 757s will be getting them (definitely not the PMNW 5500-series 752s, nor any of the older PMDL 752s).

Can anyone confirm these rumors?

It's tough to get excited about AVOD on a tiny subset (what, 22 aircraft delivered '95-96 and 2001-02) in a ~750-aircraft Delta mainline fleet.

Well, the 5500-series are likely to be replaced by the 739ERs (which will come with AVOD from the factory). Also, if the 5600-series get modded, they will fill in the void left by any 75Xs that get retired.

Of which a considerable amount already has, or will have, AVOD..

ATL-SJU or ATL-West Coast can't be fun on a 757 with no IFE, especially when many 757s DO have either overhead video or AVOD.

(I've seen pictures in the database of the 5600s at SNA and SJU, and could've sworn I saw a 5600 going to PDX or somewhere out West my last time through ATL, but don't know how often they send them there.)

Delta 757's are fairly uncommon at SNA. I can't remember the last time I saw a 757 there.. I think DL mostly sends A320/A319.

I could potentially see the 5600 fleet getting outfitted with PTV's & AVOD, but I really don't see any updates to the overhead bins on either fleet, it's just not an investment that will see ROI or income generated as a result.

Well, consider the fact that DL updated the overhead bins on the 763ER fleet. With the 739ERs coming with the Boeing Sky Interior, perhaps DL is trying to offer a more consistent cabin look.

I've noticed that you say "perhaps" quite a bit around here, very speculative...

The big difference is that the 763ER bins were extremely outdated and did not offer adequate storage for TATL and TPAC flights, for which DL is targeting high value business class customers that do generate lots of income. I just don't see the same ROI on that kind of refurb for the domestic fleet. You'll notice they did not pursue the same refurb on the 76Q/76P fleet, I think there's a reason for that. In fact, given their extreme discipline on CapEx spending, I'm surprised they would even put AVOD on the 5600's since they just got refitted with the same overhead LCD's that the PMDL 757s got.

At the end of the day, it's about bang for your buck with these mods. An AVOD system comes with a lot of cost in weight that would have to see an associated revenue increase to compensate for that cost. If not, then the mod isn't worth pursuing. I'd say the same about the bins, unless there was an extreme weight savings, it's not worth a $1M+ cost per bird to refit bins on birds that are this mature in their life cycle, especially when 757 bin space is adequate with the bin extensions. Just my 2 cents from the world according to MadDog.

There was a time when passengers would get a hard-on over AVOD. Now? Not so much. Personally, give me wifi and a comfortable seat. That's all I need.

You may feel that way, but clearly DL does not, considering the 739ER fleet will come with AVOD from the factory. DL is not stupid; they wouldn't have AVOD installed for no reason at all. On aircraft equipped with AVOD, those using the AVOD system still greatly outnumber those using Wi-Fi.

That's fine for new a/c but that's not the discussion, is it?

And you're absolutely right. That's how I feel. Hence, "personally" in my original post.

Then what about the 753s, which are already confirmed to get AVOD? Might as well do the 5600-series 752s in addition to the 753s, since the 5600-series 752s are almost as young as the 753s.

And FYI, the upgrade to the LCD monitors on the 5600-series was simply a replacement of the existing CRT monitors; it was not a completely new IFE system. DL did the same for the 763ERs initially several years ago as a stopgap upgrade, and now they are getting AVOD.

Unfortunately, with Doug Parker being in charge of the new AA if the merger with US gets approved, I don't expect this to go forward under his management. Everybody knows Doug Parker doesn't care for his customers; he only cares about making money.

Opinion.

DParker had to do what he had to do to get US to make $.

Reality is, with the industry stabilizing, the airlines are going to have to start competing again on service.

Aren't all airlines in the business of making money? Why would you assume that DL management & executives are any different? Clearly you haven't been paying attention to the numerous "enhancements" going on to the DL Skymiles program right now. Delta isn't adding AVOD to its planes to be customer friendly, again, it's adding it because there must be some revenue component to balance out the increased cost.

The 5600s are the 75A and 75Ms, correct? If Delta installs AVOD on the 5600s, I would hope that they take the opportunity to have the seat layout of the 75Ms to match that of the 75Xs. Since the 75As have the lavatory aft of 2L and mainly fly Interport routes, those will probably remain as is.

I wonder if any of the newer non 75X ships that are a similar vintage to the 5600s would be a candidate for AVOD as well?

I was on one of those aircraft back in 2010 on ATL-ABQ. It had the newer style PSUs that Boeing introduced in the mid-1990s which became standard on the 737NG (although unlike DL's 737NG fleet and very newest PMDL 752s, they were colored brown instead of white, and the two lights to indicate an FA call were red instead of white). Also, the overhead CRT monitors had a more rounded enclosure than what most of DL's non-AVOD 752s had prior to getting the new LCDs. This aircraft was a true rarity indeed, since most of the newer 752s in the PMDL fleet were among the first to get converted to Song, and subsequently, the 75Xs.

As for making them the same configuration as the 75X fleet, with the newer slimline seats (Weber 5751 or B/E Aerospace Pinnacle), DL could squeeze in a few more seats than the existing Weber 5150 seats on the 75X fleet.

You are wrong.
DL has flown the 757s to SNA regularly or many years. They switched to all 73Wfor a couple of years from 2010 to mid-2012 but then reverted back to 757s.

DL has never operated ATL-SNA with the A319/320.

The 67xx I believe are the ones that have the white 737NG-style PSUs with the white FA call lights (although unlike the the 737NGs, these have illuminated No Smoking signs instead of the symbol simply printed on them). Also, on these particular aircraft, the No Smoking signs don't flash on takeoff and landing; only the two chimes are heard (this trait is shared with the 764ER and 772ER).

Also, I have noticed ever since EC has been added to the non-AVOD 752s, the PSU over seats 19D/E/F is a 737NG-style PSU, even on the older 752s that had the aftermarket PSUs with the LED reading lights installed (which were designed as an exact fit replacement for the 1980s-style PSUs, using the existing cutouts and having the same general layout). Oddly, on my last DL 757 flight, that particular PSU still had an illuminated No Smoking sign, while the rest of them had the illuminated No Smoking signs replaced by illuminated blue Wi-Fi signs and a non-illuminated No Smoking symbol printed next to them.
