UA Back On ORD-SJU 11/5/13

Fri May 10, 2013 3:43 pm

https://hub.united.com/en-us/news/company-operations/Pages/united-announces-chicago-san-juan-route.aspx

Starting 11/5/13:

1x ORD-SJU 739 8:20-14:57
1x SJU-ORD 739 15:55-19:13

Didn't they just drop this? Seasonal only?

I wonder if this is a response to B6. They're weak in Chicago already, so this may put an end to their new ORD SJU flight.

Those route maps on United's website are a MESS! Haven't they ever heard of an interactive route map? Nobody can tell where one line starts and one line ends!

United does have an interactive route map.

On a random side note, interesting that this route map still shows SFO-ITO, even though I don't think it's been flown in over a year.

Well I guess the 167 seat 739 probably has a bit better CASM than the 138 or 144 seat A320s that used to ply this route, but 20 F and 51 Y+ is way, way too much premium capacity for ORD-SJU. If there was that kind of demand, then UA would have put its 757s on the route instead of the all Y Ted A320s, and AA wouldn't have downgauged all of its ORD-SJU flights from 757s to 738s even before the SJU intra-Caribbean hub closed. I think they only reinstated this service because B6 added the route, and I notice the only beyond-SJU connection that B6 will offer is SDQ - B6 is definitely targeting ORD-SJU O&D here. Given that B6 is not very strong in the Chicago market, I wonder if they can last. I expected them to be offering connections beyond SJU to popular vacation destinations like the Virgin Islands, SXM, and PUJ. If WN ever decides to add MDW-SJU, presumably with their 175-seat 738 (it currently operates all of their SJU services), UA and B6 could be in serious trouble.
Flying in the middle seat of coach is much better than not flying at all!

UA actually goes up to 2x daily on ORD-SJU in December by adding a RON flight. Crazy for a flight they just discontinued a few months ago....

Seasonal Service. Not that much tourist traffic to SJU in the summer. I'd expect this will go away about this tiime next year.

This is solely the reason why UA is re-entering ORD-SJU. In a way, the fact that B6 ventured into ORD (a mere spoke city in JetBlue's network) by launching a route to SJU was a huge slap in the face to United.

The Puerto Rican community in Chicago is fairly large at roughly 200,000 individuals with a median household income of $36,000, according to a study conducted by the Puerto Rican Agenda. JetBlue has built up fairly decent brand awareness in San Juan and is popular among VFR traffic. I wonder if B6 saw a lot of spill-over from their ORD-BOS/JFK flights continuing on to Puerto Rico.

That being said, I think its embarrassing that UA is spinning the re-launch of this service as though it's something new and groundbreaking (per their Facebook and Twitter social media blasts all morning) literally a month after they exited the market. Sad PR tactic on their part.

Keep in mind that UA is selling some of thier 757's to FX , so there will be less to go around (no pun intended)

I flew SJU-IAH yesterday and the flight was full. First was packed, E+ was as well, and there were only a few Econ seats open. The bummer was no that there was no Channel 9 on the flight and the IFE sucked.

I know how ya feel . I flew in a PMCO 738 EWR-FLL in March . No ch 9 , PTV's scrolling the same damn ads for the whole flight . I couldn't turn my monitor off because the button was stuck. Great crew, though.

Most cruise pax take what is the cheapest. The brave/risky/foolhearted ones who are too cheap to book the air thru the cruise line/ book a hotel the night prior are too numerous to count. It never fails when flying into FLL/MIA on cruise days I encounter a group freaking beacuse we are running an hour late and "the ship leaves at 5. What are we supposed to do?".
I don't know why blessings wear disguises. If I were a blessing, I'd run around nude!
