New US Start Up: Western Global Airlines

Wed May 15, 2013 6:50 pm

A newly formed company has applied with the DOT for certificate of public convenience and seeks to conduct domestic and foreign operations.

Western Global Airlines plans to provide widebody cargo capacity and offer ACMI services for clients using MD-11 aircraft commencing in late 2013.

Established by former Southern Air Cargo founder and CEO the company is based in Sarasota, Florida and seeks to launch with a single MD-11F growing to 4 frames by the end of the first year.

I hope it works for these guys but have they taken a realistic look at the air cargo market right now?

TNT is cutting down to bare bones, even FX is starting to say "eh, let's put it in pax cargo holds rather than buy more planes". Even the guys who don't haul boxes as their core business are parking planes.

Yes they will have an up hill challenge.

There already is a glut of freighter capacity in the US and many of the players have had to seek bankruptcy protection in recent times (World, Southern), and others cut back flying (Kalitta, Evergreen).

Also the MD-11F is not exactly the most in demand aircraft either.

I'd be glad to see another MD-11 operator, though I'll believe it when I see it in the air.

Remember Gemini Air Cargo ? Although US-based, they provided ACMI services all around the world.

In Europe there's Nordic Global Airlines, maybe Western Global in the US, who's next ?

Perhaps VCV. There are a couple of aircraft stored there.

Not going to say you are wrong here, but I am a customer of both UPS and FDX and spend a huge amount of money with both of these guys and their rates have gotten insane. So much so, we are losing clients because they can no longer afford shipping costs. When I complain to these two giants, I get the exact same answers. Labor costs are through the roof and they have to keep paying out more and more to every employee. Whether these are BS excuses or not, the truth is, I pray for the day somebody steps back into the U.S. market and gives these guys a run for the money. These two courier companies have payrolls that are way too fat from management right on down and they are passing it onto businesses just like mine. While Western Global may not be the answer, somebody needs to give these guys some competition.

You will notice I said nothing about cost structure or customer service. I was simply speaking about the glut of capacity in air cargo and how the big boys are making moves that indicate that they expect the demand for air cargo to decline. The reality is with better predictability by ship and rail and truck and improvements in supply chain management there just isn't the need for air cargo that there used to be. Whatever answer they give you about why the rates to ship have gone up have nothing to do with the glut of capacity right now that this new company is jumping into.

I never argued with you, but don't think for one second that this "little move" by FedEx seeking belly freight options on other carriers, is not a way of circumventing their own high operating costs. Think about it. It is called outsourcing and everyone is doing it when they crunch numbers and realize, other can do it cheaper. I am sure there are plenty of US, AA, DL and UA mechanics that will back me up!

Freight rates have been going up from my end with procurement, but for me, we primarily use ground transportation, and I've done comparisons over time that have shown that costs are increasing over the past 4 years. On the ground side, there are a number of factors at play causing freight rates to increase, from increased government scrutiny and enforcement of rules, employee turnover, high costs of fuel, and shrinkage of supply of trucks.

We've moved to change our procurement strategy for transportation, by changing modes of transportation; ie moving more freight to rail, especially non-critical and routine freight, which has helped, but even then, rail transportation has seen small, but steady increases. But I would imagine that other people that rely on freight transportation have done the same, re-evaluate their freight needs and shifted modes of transportation based upon what they need.

Allegedly the tails involved are:

48435
48512
48513
48543

Two are ex World Airways, and other two are with Nordic in Finland.

Just checked airfleets, and come up with the following;

48435 World Airways N384WA stored
48512 Nordic Global OH-LGC active
48513 Nordic Global OH-LGD active
48543 Eva Cargo B-2178 stored

It seems strange that 2 of the aircraft are still apparently elsewhere, and that they were operated by 3 different airlines.

Surely, this must create commonality issues.
