A380 Production Thread Part 14

Wed May 15, 2013 8:43 pm

Is there an overview available which A380's are already flying with the wing fixe installed? And which are still to be done? Just had an A380 of LH overtake me on the Autobahn A3 last weekend. That was an awesome view where the wings just looked glorious.  .

How can you have "permanent repairs" completed before the AD is issued.

I presume these must be "alternative" and "substantiated" or perhaps the airlines involved took the gamble that the repair they were doing would in fact be the final AD.

One presumes that the changes Airbus has incorporated in frames under construction, will be compliant.

I don't have a problem with this but it is a little risky. I'm sure the same applied to 787 battery mods otherwise Boeing could not have got them out the door so quickly!

I still can't believe those guys are doing this. At NRT they use remote gates typically, and the A380 can't fit at HND, so this will be fun to see how they employ this.

That's likely exactly what happened, both for the A380 and the 787. Once the content of the AD is known, work was started to be compliant with it so that by the time the AD is formally released, only the paperwork remains.

Indeed. This order has now proceeded (much) further than other "strange" orders like Kingfisher, Virgin, Vietnam, Air Austral, Vietnam Airlines . . .

Wonder when this is no longer considered a strange order . . . !
Also wonder if this would put pressure on ANA and/or JAL to order the beast.

Interesting....
This page
http://www.planespotters.net/Production_List/Airbus/A380/index.php?p=2
shows MSN146 to become part of Qatar fleet. and MSNs 118 and 148 as #11 and #12 for LH.
The information on that page seems to be rather outdated. Is there any source with more reliable information available?

That page is not up-to-date.

MSN118 was LH #11 but this MSN has been canceled. Now MSN146 will become LH #11 and MSN149 will be LH #12. MSN148 is BA #5 and is already in TLS for final assembly.

Also MSN104 does not exist anymore, MSN115 is now AF #9.

Without wanting to go into too much detal, but is QR really hoping to counter EK with this high density seating?

RR are now offering an upgraded Trent 900 for EIS mid next year:

"The Trent 900EP2 further optimises turbine case cooling using technology from the Trent XWB to modulate tip clearances. There is also improved LPT sealing, and an optimised intermediate-pressure compressor. With aerodynamic improvements introduced for the core air inlet, an additional fuel burn benefit of 0.5-0.8% will be delivered at entry into service in mid-2014"

Great to see XWB technologies trickle down to the other models. Already the A380's from BA onwards will have the new wing twist and higher MTOW, and every incremental improvement will make an already very efficient aircraft better. Now if only Airbus could get production rates up, I'm sure more airlines would be signing up.

Well, that was always expected of course. It shows that like every airplane, the A380 is steadily improving. And that whilst she is still in its first version. There are no A380-900's, A380-1000's, A380-800R's of A380-800F's yet in sight.

But in time, at least one or more of those version will emerge, and will make sure the A380 is going to be around us for a very long time to come.  .

Probably not the best thread for it, but Airbus' press release about the DORIC order indicated that the A380 fleet is nearing 1,000,000 flight hours (of commercial service I presume).

Is there any celebration of sorts planned for that event?

When the configuration of the BA 380s was announced the F Class cabin was described as being "Enhanced First". It was stated that the enhancements related to "additional personal and stowage space". Does anyone know what this actually means? For example I assume the word "additional" is a comparison with other BA (and not other airlines') "New First" cabins. Is this correct?
