Pan Am 747 Mockup In Grand Central Terminal

Was this common during the early days of the 747 ? Did other airlines do it as well ?

Does any airline do these elaborate promotions today ?

I believe Delta's T-4X in Manhattan is pretty elaborate.

Don't forget that PanAm's HQ was in building was just north of and connected to GCT (since the demise of PanAm, the Met Life or 200 Park Avenue Building). Until 1977, The PanAm building had a heliport on top of it's roof for 1st class pax and those who paid for direct service to JFK airport, PA's major international base in the USA. GCT was where many potential business flyers might pass through for their commuter trains to the northern suburbs of NYC so showing off a 747 mock up would be good advertising. Even today, events and commercial displays are held in the former waiting hall of GCT.

So, before I look at the photo I'm envisioning this full scale model of a 747 hanging from the rafters of the main meeting hall over the clock!

I miss the old BA billboard of 2:59:56 with concorde and the record time, when you came out of the midtown tunnel in NYC (going from Queens into Manhattan).

Ah the Times Sq Brewery. Had a few drinks in there. Never saw the Concorde there though.

I suppose if ever there were a room that could fit a 747 (I know this isn't what the OP means) and wasn't also a hangar, it would be the main concourse of Grand Central. I recently visited for the first time and was very impressed. Chicago's Union Station and Ogilvie Transportation Center were my reference points, so it's no surprise that I was.

That would have been cool to see back in the day. Now that area is reserved for that monstrosity of an Apple Store. Why GCT would go along as to have a giant Apple Store as a permanent fixture I'll never understand.

It was donated to the Cradle of Aviation museum out on Long Island with the intention of putting it on display near the entrance but they could not afford to build a pedestal for it (due to its enormous size ) so they just put it up for sale a couple of years later...
