What Came First? Untied Or United?

Sat May 18, 2013 5:09 pm

Let me start by saying that I am a strong believer in consumer advocacy. I admire such pioneer advocates as David Horowitz and his show Fight Back! If this were not to true, the big companies would literally have worse customer service than they already do.

Most would look at the small guy as being bullied by these Goliath entities. Yet, in this case, I personally go with the later. The owner of the complaint site, just might have gone a little too far in the selection of the domain name and website. He has also offered to provide the airline with customer relations services for a fee.

As a consumer, I dislike being tricked into sites which are googled with key words and then I presume to be shopping. As well as making a typo, which I never do, and going into and ruining my initial experience. This just feels annoying and only contributes to paying more for my airline travel dollar. I don't mean to pick on this guy but he did steals that name idea from a company that has been around for 85+ years. Just thought I would get my two-cents out. Again.

This guy has been holding a grudge for years. I'm not sure anyone takes him seriously at this point, particularly with the blatant copyright infringement.

The "Untied" site has been around for 16 years. This is the oldest version in the Internet Archive from 1998. The "History" link says it was launched in April 1997.

Nothing new about that. My point is that the creative idea, which has been around for 85+ years was taken from the company. The squatting would of otherwise never had been used by the user.

Of course his idea was taken from the company. That is the point. It's a play on words. Like Northworst.

This article is from several months ago, and has side by side examples of united.com and the spoof site. There have been some modifications in the meantime to give clues that "untied" is not the official site of UA. For example, the TI in "unTIed" is red now, and a red frown face is drawn on a globe. If I may say so, you can't do that to a tulip as easily.

A checkoff box now greets visitors with: "This is not the website of United Airlines.

This site exists only because of the airline's outright hostility toward its passengers and many of its employees"", then click, "I understand" or "leave".

Still, the look and feel have been copied complete with colors, thereby giving UA the grounds to sue. What is ironic is the red banner "UNITED AIRLINES ATTACKS UNTIED.COM" prominently displayed on a site whose function is to attack UA.

A quasi similar example is Nissan.com This just happens to be a local guy near where I live that I have followed over the last 2 decades. I would agree he had a beef to begin with. He registered the name first, and it is his name. Now days, it almost looks like he's just putting the minimum on his site to keep from getting labeled as a squatter.

The company is not taking him to court because he has a complaint site, but because it is confusingly similar to the company's site. He actually changed the site which had the tulip in March or April of 2012 to look very similar to the new United logo.

My apologies for the misleading format of my cut and paste from "untied". The way I did it made it look like the second paragraph was my words, but it was part of the disclaimer box which untied.com now has when you enter the site. I should have put the untied text in a quote box.

I do not agree with the views of untied.com. Yes people can have problems traveling on UA. I have had problems on UA trips in the last few years but I always wound up in F or E+ so I would say that the customer service has been good, and UA is still my preferred carrier, but I just don't get much chance to travel with them compared to WN or US.

United has at times had absolutely abysmal customer service. The mid to late 90's which spawned the site was probably the worst in the company's history. I was initially a fan of Untied.com because the name itself poked fun at the very notion of United being, well... united.

But, as time wore on, United customer service slowly improved into the 2000's. Untied sort of slid into the realm of irrelevancy. Then came the merger. United's choice to go with Continental's technology caused chaos at most UA hubs, and once again Untied.com saw new opportunities to slam the company. Problem is, most folks realized that the merger of two huge companies and vastly different corporate cultures was bound to be difficult. Other than those who got caught up in the very initial days of the merger, customer service was still better than the horrible 90's.

Bottom line, Untied is still somewhat irrelevant. It's a mild annoyance. Anyone who mistakes Untied for United's official website is an absolute idiot and shouldn't be allowed to use the internet.
It's been swell, but the swelling has gone down.

I don't agree it was his idea at all. Aside from it being a complaint site, he is using all of the creative work the airline has invested in and changed along the way. The airline did not get pissed until he started to modify it again and make it look like the present image. Not that their present logo is any better than the last and can use another total makeover or revamp.

I don't know much about Canada law on this but I do know that shopping experience is instantly judged. Subliminal marketing is very powerful. A flash on a television screen can make or break a sale. People spend seconds with online shopping sites and it may ruin their decision to go to what they initially intended.
