UA Transatlantic Schedule Dec. 2013

Mon May 20, 2013 2:46 pm

Over the weekend we were starting to talk about a Christmas trip to France and Geermany to see family. Our plans are far from set. However, we did s find ome major glaring schedule changes on UA ex-Europe -IAD and EWR.

For instance one option is/was CDG-IAD on Dec. 29 and there is no UA flight that day. There is one Dec. 30. Are we to believe that UA is not going to be daily this coming winter on IAD-CDG-IAD? It certainly looks that way.

Another option, for us, is TXL-EWR sometime after Christmas. However, the week between Christmas and New Years there doesnt seem to be any nonstops at all. I know TXL is a difficult market for US airlines but is UA going to drop i TXL during the winter months?

Just for fun, we checked LHR-IAD and UA will only have 2 flights a day around the holidays. One is the 757 early morning flight and a 777 late in the afternoon. I am almost positive that is a major schedule change from past years.

Can anybody shed any light on this situation. Will there be more schedule adjustments that just might put some of these flights back? Thank you.

Both particular times you specify see some of the lowest demand for passengers during the X-Mas and New Year's season. Most airlines throttle back service significantly during that time of year due to the extremely low demand for flights.
What gets measured gets done.

Extend the fun! Check dates beyond Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's holidays.

IAD-LHR (to use one of your example city pairs) is 3x daily on every date in January.

2 things.
First, UA's future schedules are dummy schedules beyond about three months out.
But second, CO has always diverted widebody equipment to other routes during the Christmas holiday season. They'll often take a 777 off of EWR-LHR, and put it on IAH-MEX instead.
I presume new UA is doing the same things.

The schedule will change. It hasn't been finalized that far out.

There are often international flight reductions around the holidays. The capacity is needed for domestic travel, and premium cabin demand collapses since there is no business travel in that week, which makes the flights very hard to make money on. You'll see an increase in domestic capacity. You might not see many international planes flying on domestic routes, but the crews are needed. United always has trouble having enough crew to staff all the extra domestic flights added around the holidays.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

You are looking at holiday cancelations. UA does it every year. Check non-thanksgiving/Christmas/new years weeks and you'll see the normal winter schedules.

Correct! Last winter we had 5 day BFS/ DUB/SNN etc.. as they flew to said city. laid over 3 days then flew back. One thing they do is allow the pilots to bring their families with them. They figured it's cheaper and safer to bring their family -Positive space- as loads are low, then risk a significant level of sick calls that we get. It helped last year to cover TLV 4 prior to push!!!!

USAirways cancels all their trans Atlantic flights from PHL on the night if Thanksgiving. It is always strange to see their wide bodies at the gates in PHL early the next morning.
