SkyWest Picks Embraer Over Bombardier For New Jet

Tue May 21, 2013 2:04 pm

"Bombardier’s Brazilian rival Embraer SA said on Tuesday it has clinched a deal with SkyWest as many as 200 regional jets; total value of the order could reach $8.3-billion (U.S.)." (The Globe and Mail)

Sounds like UA made the choice in part; SkyWest is to purchase and operate 40 E-175s for UAL.

I would imagine this capacity will be replacing 50 seat capacity over the next ten years?

Unclear at this point, as the CEO of SkyWest made a statement which leaves this up in the air depending on employee and team cooperation. In short, as of now it could be for growth or for aircraft replacement.

Well....United purchased those EJets themselves...so this purchase is likely unrelated to that UA order....but OO is setting themselves up to win future flying for AA, who is going to have a huge need for these jets going forward.

Yes, UAL bought 30 E-175s themselves. That flying hasn't yet been awarded or at least announced.

However, OO will be flying 40 E-175s for UAL. Keep reading the news sites.

And yes, that means at least 70 E-175s in UAL colors soon.

See this link, please the bottom of the first paragraph closely:

Actually, this one may be a little more clear:

So, what happened with the order that OO made with Mitsubishi? What are those used for? Replacement for the RJs?

Another order for 100 CRJ900 is still possible from Skywest, they have a bunch of 50 seaters to replace.

There was a rumor kicked around on another thread, and grant it that it's an a.net rumor, that DL may be in the market for some more 76 seat flying to expand feed at LAX and SEA. The rumor said there is still room in scope to make it happen.

As in converting their current 30 options for CRJ900 or ordering even more? Perhaps SkyWest had to turn to Embraer because DL has secured 70 production slots at BBD and there was no room for more?

This of course assumes they can find people to fly them with the ATP-1500 rule coming into effect.

Where would you think OO would base another 40 E-175's? Let the guesses begin

Nitpick, this is only an order for 40 E-175s. The rest are but options and purchase rights.

They just ensured pilots will want to fly for them. While the pool might get smaller, there will be winners and losers...

It isn't nitpicking when the "firm" part of the order represents only 20% of the number that is headlined.

Those Ejets are certainly nice, amazing aircraft with a big jet feel and pax really enjoy them. Excellent news that OO is joining the Ejet club.

I always book an Ejet over another flight that's operated by a CRJ/ERJ on the same route even if it costs slightly more.

How firm was that order? If maintained by SkyWest, I suspect the MRJ's could replace the CRJ's later on, the CR7's in particular. The MRJ is sized much closer as a direct CRJ replacement, whereas the Ejets are actually somewhat of an upgauge (an E175 seats about as much as a CR9 2-class, and is heavier)

It's firm until cancelled. In the meantime, the ball's in Mitsubishi's court to deliver the product at or better than spec.

I suspect that the timing of those deliveries is so that SkyWest can be delivered a solid product once all of the entry-to-service bugs have been worked out. They've never taken delivery of a type that hasn't had at least a few years of operational service under its belt.

I have heard that if SEA and LAX get regional flying that it would not be Skywest getting it. A CEO of another DCI carrier has said that they are looking to add west coast flying.

Delta has an order for 40+30 CR9s. If the 30 options are taken then that will max out Delta's limits for 70/76 seat jests again.

The only way OO will fly EMBs for Delta is if they start parking the OO owned CR9s. (or order E70s and use them to replace the CR7s.)

Also, 9E is getting the 40 CR9s and it sounds like that is who will get the 30 options. I am assuming this is who your talking about faguy.

Or Compass who is starting 1x daily LAX-SEA and 2x daily LAX-MCI for Delta.

So OO is getting the new MRJ (who are they using this for?) and the ERJ....I wonder how that will balance out.

So does Bombardier still have a lot of work to do marketing the C-series; or is it Skywest thought the C-series was just more risky?

Option 3: United explicitly told them to buy the E175...

If this were the case, then they would've only bought 40, with no options for more, and no shopping to other carriers.

For this particular flying (76 seats), the C-series could not even be in the running as it is larger. If anything, the CRJ-705 or CRJ-900 lost out here.

I would agree with RDH3E though, this may have been heavily influenced by UA rather than any existing relationships with BBD.

UA, DL (and I believe AA) mainline pilot scope clauses prohibit regional carriers from flying jets with more than 76 seats under the United Express/Delta Connection, etc. banners. The C-series was never in contention for SkyWest's regional contract flying.
