For Scandinavia: Thomas Cook Scandinavia, as SAS recently started SFO.

For England: Probably Thomas Cook to LGW or MAN. I don't really see BA being interested in OAK that much.

I choose Thomas Cook for both as they seem to be focusing on tourism, which seems to be right up their alley.
The views I express are my own and do not reflect the views and opinions of my company.

In any case, I am sure it is 99% Norwegian, which is extremely agressive, and is expanding long-haul. And 99% sure it is not TCS which is kind of old-school charter airline that has basically sun&sea destinations (hence OAK does not fit). A CPH/OSL/ARN-OAK with Norwegian could make sense (they are also starting FLL and JFK).

I think it might be Condor out of FRA. Condor (Thomas Cook) has been building up cities along the west coast. I also think that maybe Edelweiss would be interested in OAK service with their A330's. Either of them could do a round-robin flight like what Martinair did in the past...FRA-OAK-SEA-FRA or FRA-SEA-OAK-FRA.

Don't know about their a330-300s. They are already deployed on alot of routes, and routes such as TPA they are downgrading because they don't have enough planes. But Norwegian seems like a carrier, covering big markets such as New York (JFK), Miami with the large market, being a tourist destinations and cruises via (FLL) and OAK would cover the bay area.

Hmmm...maybe Norwegian is looking at SEA as well. SEA has a fairly large Scandinavian population and could give FI a run for its money during the summer season.

Oakland to the Azores? How can there possibly be a market for that?

The San Francisco/Oakland area has the third largest Portuguese population in the United States after Boston and New York.

Believe it or not...OAK has had that seasonal service for years. These days, it's operated by SATA International using an A310.

I hope to fly on the Arkefly service this year - interesting route too, on Thu it goes via LAS. LAS to OAK on a Dutch charter 767 is pretty exotic! Then again I think Arkefly is 2-4-2 on the seven-six which is super packed. It's exotic qualities probably wear off pretty fast. Still fancy it though...

Why not ? On Great Circle Mapper, PDL-OAK is 5010mi long. Of course this data is not 100% accurate compared to real flights, however S4 has in its fleet of A310 one -325(ET) which has a range of around 6000mi.

Thank you for the information. I am not verse in the range of the A310 and was basing my guess on an aircraft that is 20+ years old. But, it looks like the flight stops in Toronto before heading over the Atlantic.

S4 236 Oakland (OAK) 16:15 (Scheduled)

And...they are Portuguese from the Azores, mostly.

I think the S4 flights between the Azores and OAK change from year to year. I've seen the Azores Express flights stop in YYZ, Hamilton, BOS. There were a couple of years where the service used North American 767-300s instead of SATA International.

Did a random search on this flight, and it looks like it can do nonstop eastbound.

All, SATA ,Sociedade Açoreana de Transportes Aéreos (English: Azorean Society for Aviation Transport), has been flying the OAK-TER segment seasonally in the summer months for many years. It is a great niche market for them and they enjoy significant repeat business. Typically, the season sells out and every seat is full. Service onboard the A310-300 is reported to be great. The aircraft makes a scheduled technical stop in YYZ (YHM was used previously), but sometime it is omitted if conditions are favorable for a nonstop.

Those of us here at OAK wanted to thank you all for your interest in our growing international business. In order to dispel some rumors here are the facts about what is up for this Summer at OAK:

REGARDING EUROPEAN SERVICE:
OAK welcomes back nonstop service to international vacation destinations this summer, allowing both Bay Area travelers and inbound tourists more opportunities for travel:

Following the successful launch last summer, Dutch airline ArkeFly, a unit of TUI Travel, is back for their second season of service to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) which began on May 19, 2013. ArkeFly flies to Amsterdam from OAK every Thursday and Sunday through October 20th. Thursday departures are nonstop to Amsterdam, while Sunday flights make one stop in Los Angeles (LAX).

SATA International will resume seasonal summer service from OAK to the Azores Islands on June 6, 2013. The Azores Islands are a Portuguese archipelago paradise in the Atlantic Ocean roughly 900 miles from Lisbon. The once-weekly flight departs and arrives every Wednesday between June 6 and October 2, 2013.

REGARDING MEXICO SERVICE:
Volaris Airlines offers daily nonstop flights to Guadalajara out of OAK with connecting service to destinations throughout Mexico. Nonstop flights to Mexico City (MEX), Mexico are also scheduled for the peak summer season with evening flights scheduled Fridays through Sundays in July, and Fridays through Mondays in August and September.

So then the rumors of "new" flights to Germany, UK and Scandinavia are just rumors. Airports, OAK,SFO SJC etc... talk to carriers regularly about opening up new routes. Some pan out and others do not.

Of course, OAK is not going to openly discuss upcoming service until it is officially announced by the airline. They won't even speculate. Nothing's changed there.

You know, in all my years of flying to or through OAK, I've never seen the A310 there. It's kind of like a narwhal. You've heard of them, seen photos of them and you know they exist, but you've never actually seen one in person.

Considering it only operates seasonally and only one day a week, the odds are against you.

I thought the same way when Martinair was flying 747-200's on the OAK-AMS route and Corsair 747-SP on the PPT-OAK-ORY route.

And how I miss those days......OAK is so much more convenient to the East Bay and is actually closer to downtown San Francisco than SFO is. When the BART Connector is done I do hope OAK gets the international flights they deserve. And one more BIG advantage is that when SFO shuts down or slows down due to fog---OAK is untouched!!

What kind of article is this?

According to industry sources, the city is in talks with a number of European airlines and close to inking deals with carriers out of Germany, Scandinavia and possibly the U.K.

If airports aren't talking to airlines to start service to their station then the airports aren't doing their job.
