I think you'll find that Cathay retired all their Tristars quite a while ago now.

I can tell you the first L1011 of CX to be scrapped was in Melbourne.

I don't know if it was a regular service, But I do remember seeing a CX tristar in Sydney. I can't say exactly when, but a guess in the mid 80's.

Hope it helps some.

It's a long time ago now, but I do recall seeing a CX L1011 Tristar in Sydney. It would have been mid 80's and I don't think it was a regular visitor, but at least once it has been in Sydney.

I checked an ABC of jan. 1992, when CX still had their Tristars, and there were no scheduled Australia Tristar flights then. Melbourne, Perth and Sydney were done with 747s, while Cairns, Darwin and Adelaide had/have no direct flights. Australia could not be reached by Tristar (they didn't have the long range 500s) without stops so I guess the 747 was the best choice. But probably the Tristar was OK for (military, government, leisure) charters to everywhere.
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

thanks for the replies guys!!!!!!!

as i can remember....in the early 90s.......every year when i fly from SYD to HKG, CX uses 747-300 and i would be so disappointed because i was hoping to get on those brand new 747-400......but as you know, back then they didn't have that many 744 so i was 'stuck' with the 747-300......and i can still remember the very first time i flew on a 744.........haha....i was so excited!!! it was like a dream finally comes true!!!!!!

I have a family friend who used to be a flight attendant for CX (she's now got a desk job in upper management at CX headquarters).

She told me that CX only flew the L1011 only on routes to Singapore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Jakarta, Taipei and several cities in Japan. Australian cities were out of the range of the L10's and the routes to Australia from HKG were all done by 747's (remember, a one-way flight from HKG to SYD took over 8 hours).
