John Travolta Challenger 300 Test-pilot?

Thu May 23, 2013 4:28 pm

John Travolta is giving Bombardier and Netjets some good publicity.. He posed for some photographs at EBACE Geneva infront of the new Challenger 350 with the management of Bombardier and Netjets..

Looks like Mr. Travolta will be Bombardier's go to guy

I've seen several ads with Mr. Travolta infront of a Challenger 300... I didn't know he was actually allowed into some of the test flights

is he type-rated in a Bombardier corporate jet??

He owns a Challenger 600 now at Jumbolair

I don't think he has the 707 anymore - it has been sitting on the north ramp at MIA for a while now, I heard it has a lot of problems and is likely to be scrapped.

Got his own Challenger 601, so I'd hope so! Along with the 707 and a couple of Gulfstreams.

They appeared to have glued longer hair on to the lord-of-the-skies.

He is such an excellent actor! Note the way he can gaze upon the panel in the sim with a knowledgeable test pilot like expression and then utter the classic cliche, "climbs like a homesick angel." Remarkable.

I read they installed a new spar of some sort.

Mr. Travolta only has a private pilots license and I believe his type-rating for the 707 is restricted from being PIC. So he has to have somebody fully typed in the 707 to fly with him.

But I'm sure he has type-ratings for the other bizjets he's owned.

I wonder if corrosion is what got to his 707? It's the curse of early model aircraft. A wind spar replacement is pretty expensive costing $$$$$.

Travolta had a dramatic and widely reported emergency landing many years ago at KDCA in his G-II after all electrics were lost. It was a long time ago but I do recall his quote (paraphrasing) "I'm kind of a Hero in the pilot community" which was so arrogant I can still remember it today.

Couldn't find the NTSB report but here's an old news article:

The NTSB would not get involved in a simple event like that.

During my time living in Bangor, ME I've crossed paths with him several times.. though never talked to him. Those that did said he was really nice and down to earth...a real airplane geek. I left BGR not long after he bought the 707. He was leasing it for a while. They would keep his GIIB in our hangar which was spotless..!!

Simple event? You should read the story. Most, if not all of it, is accurate as I recall this story from when it happened.

Not sure about the "purging of NTSB reports and FAA tapes" bit but it is real. Aviation trade journals covered it widely back at the time.

Apparently they did, since they put out this paper: http://www.ntsb.gov/doclib/recletters/1994/a94_6_8.pdf

My point being the NTSB does not investigate every single event. If I recall there is a standard that must be met for them to get involved. At the airport I work at I've seen many things that never made the FAA, NTSB, AvHerald or even the local news.

This is true, but a complete electrical failure certainly meets that standard.

This reads more like the event was used in the paper to the FAA talking about setting proper separation in the event of an emergency. The information could have just come from the report JT would have been required to submit due to the power failure.

You do realize most of the general public believes John Travolta was flying that Gulfstream IIB single-pilot over Washington D.C. that night.

Here is a sample L alternator fault aboard a G-1159 handled by Nadia (a.k.a. GulfstreamGirl) and her Captain BigDawg aboard a Gulfstream IIB. It is not politically correct to say that Captain BigDawg probably wishes this had occurred somewhere at a remote airport in Siberia where he and that ex-Vogue model F/O would have been stranded for days...and nights. http://Facebook.com/GulfstreamGirl

He also used to drive Spruce Creek Fly In nuts (Aviation community near Daytona Beach) when he would fly his noisy G-II at 3am

the link doesn't work....

Before he had his tracking removed from FlightAware, JT used to fly a lot of flights during the overnight hours.(1200-05:00) Maybe he's an insomniac? Or maybe he gets a smoother ride, free of convective type turbulence.
