Boeing Books 101 New 737 Orders For Whom?

Thu May 23, 2013 7:59 pm

Boeing added 101 new 737 orders this week and reduced net 737 orders by 24 so the total for unidentified 737 customers stands at 155. Any idea who this is?

What about American Airlines?

Do they have enough new aircraft on order to replace their Mad Dogs?

Maybe AC is looking for replacing their Airbus fleet and want to emulate WS in their business model. Or seriously I wonder if it is Easyjet or a leasing company, to be placed with a contracted carrier. There have not been much noise from leasing companies lately.

I doubt if there will be any orders from the likes of AA or DL. WN could be looking to replace their older 737s with newer 737s.

Dominic Gates posted the following breakdown:

"Boeing posted firm orders for 107 jets Thursday, including 21 conversions of existing 737 orders to the future 737 MAX model. There were also three 737 cancelations, for a net increase of 83 new orders. "

They have 130 A319-100s and A321-200s coming via lease, plus 100 737-800s coming via firm order in the near term. They also have a score or two of 737-800s due from earlier orders.

In the long-term, they have 130 A320neo and 100 737MAX on firm order.

If it didn't include MAX I would have guessed FR, MOL was in Chicago this week...

Nope, they've already firmed their order for 100 737 MAX aircraft (along with their 787 order) earlier this year:

American Firms 143 Aircraft With Boeing (by 817Dreamliiner Feb 7 2013 in Civil Aviation)

Plus:

I think 50 of those UFO 737 orders are for Jet Airways.

We should look for a customer with at least 21 737NG still to be delivered, probably a bunch more, from 2015 onwards, and with a need for another 40 frames extra (assuming the order for 61 MAX is from one customer). There are not that many I can think of really... FR surely springs to mind, but I would think THEY will order at least 100... How about China Eastern? Or Spicejet? GOL? Perhaps even Lion... But it could very well also be a leasing company. Guess we'll know at the Paris air show.

Easyjet only has Airbus CEO on order, no 737NGs. Don't think it's them.

There were rumours floating around that 9W is adding 101 B737s and the order will be formally announced at the Paris Airshow.
An airplane might disappoint any pilot but it'll never surprise a good one.

Boeing have traditionally not waited for either of the big air shows to announce orders.
Having said that, their customer might want to do so though.

Time will tell.

My guess is it's an existing 737 customer with a new order.

"The net impact on the 737 order book was 16 new orders for the current 737NGs and 61 orders for the forthcoming 737 MAXs."

So, who needs 16 new B-737NGs? Who needs up to 61 B-737MAXs, assuming this order is from 1 carrier or leasing company?

Yeah, I think those 460 new A/C coming in the next several years, in addition to the 200 738s they already have, should satisfy their narrowbody fleet needs for a while.

Meaning the workers will become the owners? Seriously?

A similar business strategy in the 80s turned into an epic failure at alliance-sister United Airlines.

Could the order be for a Chinese carrier? Almost at the same time, there is the Airbus top up order from Air China and Shenzhen, and they operate a mixed fleet.
